Viola Davis was on Amy Poehler's podcast on Thursday and they got to talking about love scenes, specifically how Viola doesn't like them.

"I can't stand doing them," the award-winning actress told Amy on Good Hang. "I finally said it on How to Get Away with Murder. I'm not doing love scenes anymore. You write a love scene, I'm not doing it. Unless you give me a boyfriend who has a stomach."

Wait, what? Listeners didn't quite understand, and neither did Amy, so Viola continued. "A big gut. You know why? Because you'll actually write the scene. It won't be about taking off the shirt and the six-pack abs."

Viola Davis, Oscar winner, Golden Globe winner, Emmy winner and Tony Winner, does not like love scenes because they make her feel bad about herself.

She mentioned having to film a scene with actor Billy Brown in How to Get Away With Murder and how uncomfortable she felt next to his "abs". If you're not familiar with Billy Brown, feel free to google him. The man is a former model.

But, see, this is interesting because Viola, who has been married to Julius Tennon for 23 years, is not even remotely excited about the prospect of rolling around with a former model, (though, to be honest, there's nothing about Brown that suggests he was a model. He looks like he could model tomorrow if required).

And it's not just because she's married. Instead, she's comparing her body to his.

Can you imagine a male actor doing this? Imagine Adam Driver saying he felt self-conscious playing Scarlett Johansson's husband in Marriage Story? Imagine Tom Holland confessing to being intimidated by Zendaya's beauty on the set of Spider-Man? Or, how about Leonardo DiCaprio saying how intimidating it was to play Margot Robbie's love interest in The Wolf of Wall Street, because she's 16 years younger than him, and was then and is now, obviously in great shape.

Leonardo, 51, who is currently dating Italian model Vittoria Ceretti, 27, would never. 

Which is funny because, if you'll recall, it was Leo and his perfectly normal stomach area that gave rise to the term "Dad Bod" ten years ago. Do you remember it? Leo was not even 40 then and drew admiration from women for his commitment to not looking ripped. His tummy was devoid of abs and this was comforting to many as it, (somewhat ironically) suggested he was approachable.

The Dad Bod trend took off, largely because it meant, on some level, that these men were busy being fathers, not gym junkies. Men with soft bellies were suddenly hot. Manopshere looks-maxers take note! Or, actually, forget it. Look, yeah, it was a simpler time.

Now Leonardo has copped his fair share of flak for, how can I say this delicately? Letting himself go a little bit. Some have cruelly questioned how his head can keep getting so big. Which is obviously rude. But none of it has stopped him from getting roles and nominations and it has certainly not stopped him from getting, (young, model) girlfriends.

So it was even more interesting this week at the Oscars when the internet decided that Leonardo Di Caprio looked kind of hot? Not Titanic hot, (please – we're no longer children), but … maybe "Errol Flynn" hot? Was it just the moustache? Or did his hair look a little darker too? There were some corners of the internet who speculated there had been work, specifically botox, around the jaw line. One nurse said it was a lower facelift, which seems a little far-fetched, but speaks to the overall glow-up of the man. In the end, most agreed it was probably down to a little weight loss.

So, just to recap: Viola Davis, who was 50-something, in amazing shape and the first actor on the call sheet in a series made specifically for her, was intimidated by a man with abs, while Leonardo Di Caprio, can grow facial hair and have everyone say, "WOW! No wonder the models love him!"

We know there are double standards in Hollywood. We know the rules are different for men. It's just a shame, this late in the game, when Ozempic bodies and taut faces are being normalised in women, that all men have to do is a tiny tweak and – hey now, they're suddenly sexy.
