Opposition Leader calls for snap election as he rejects budget tax changes. 

Opposition leader Angus Taylor has called for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to hold a federal election now, saying he betrayed Australian voters with budget tax changes.

It's been almost a month since Treasurer Jim Chalmers handed down the 2026 federal budget, featuring changes to negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount, both of which have been met with criticism from the coalition.

It was Nationals leader Matt Canavan who initially called for an early election in order to get a mandate for the tax changes, a call now echoed by Taylor. 

"Let the Australian people decide whether or not they want to see these tax increases, Mr Speaker, I know they don't," Taylor said, "And if you don't have the courage to call an election now, we will make the next election a referendum on these tax increases, Mr Speaker, one way or another."

During the 2025 election campaign, Albanese promised the government did not have plans to make changes to negative gearing or capital gains taxes.

Australia's multi-million population milestone. 

Australia's population has just passed 28 million people.

That's according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics population clock, which estimated the milestone was reached just before 6am Tuesday. 

The running estimate is based on an assumed birth every 2 minutes and 16 seconds, a death every 3 minutes and 33 seconds, a new long-term arrival every 59 seconds, and one resident leaving to live overseas every 2 minutes and 35 seconds.

Taken together, it means Australia's headcount is currently increasing by roughly one person every 1 minute and 15 seconds.

Norwegian Princess to cut studies in Australia short.

Norway's Princess Ingrid Alexandra is cutting her studies in Australia short, heading home as her mother, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, becomes increasingly unwell.

Crown Prince Haakon told reporters in Japan his 22-year-old daughter "plans to come home soon" as the family navigates this "difficult" time.

The future queen is midway through a three-year international relations and arts degree at the University of Sydney.

Mette-Marit was diagnosed with chronic pulmonary fibrosis in 2018, and Haakon has said she is "seriously ill" and has worsened in recent months, leaving him "worried" about her health.

Princess Ingrid-Alexandra's move comes as a man is set to front court accused of stalking the young royal. 

Carrie Bickmore shares an update on her health. 

Carrie Bickmore has shared a health update just weeks after stepping back from her Hit Network radio show because of serious vocal cord problems.

Posting a photo in a hospital bed to Instagram, the 45-year-old wrote, "OK voice… time to come back." It's not known the extent of her hospital visit.

On air last month, Carrie told listeners her voice was in "a very bad way" and she needed time off to avoid permanent damage.

It follows an earlier health scare shared in April, when she cut an artery and suffered muscle and nerve damage after accidentally running into a wall, requiring treatment and plastic surgery.

Idris Elba has been knighted by King Charles III in a ceremony at Windsor Castle.

The actor was among some 68 people receiving the honours, including comedians Dame Meera Syal and Paul Elliott.

The Luther star was awarded a knighthood in the New Year Honours for services to young people.
