God, I love working in a girl office.

(By girl office, I mean a workplace filled with wonderful women.)

When I walked into Mamamia's Melbourne office recently, I was met with a chorus of 'Ooooohhhhhhs', 'You look great today!!!' and 'Where's that jacket from?!'.

Not only did this shower of compliments puff up my ego, but it also affirmed a non-essential purchase I'd agonised over.

That purchase? An oversized bomber leather jacket in the deep berry tones I'm seeing everywhere ahead of winter.

Like most people, I'm trying to be more considered with my fashion purchases. I find the 'shoppies' (the pull to buy stuff!) strongest in March and April because all the new-season styles start dropping online and in stores.

Jackets for autumn and winter are on my mind and all over my feed. Specifically, funnel neck trench jackets, brown leather jackets and bomber jackets in leather or PU material.

I'd been eyeing off the sold-out Naked Vice The Rory Berry Jacket ($289.95), but before signing up to the waitlist, I asked myself a few brutally honest questions.

The very same questions our contributing fashion editor and Nothing to Wear podcast co-host Tamara Davis Holland recommends pondering before you buy something new.

First up: Do I actually like it, or have I been #influenced?

Tam says the reason a style or trend you loved a few seasons ago now feels dated or wrong is because our eye simply craves newness.

It makes so much sense! And it's why I'm undoubtedly being influenced to buy a bomber leather jacket by my favourite fashion and style creators.

But I think that's OK, because the second question I asked myself was…

Does this feel like me?

Traditional leather jackets have never been my style. They're always too rigid, too stark black for my fair skin tone and too expensive. You'll even pay upwards of $100-$300 for a leather-look jacket these days.

The bomber leather jacket silhouette trend along with versions in earthy brown, berry, mushroom and khaki tones intuitively feel more aligned with my personal style.

I gravitate towards these colours (and animal print!) in my wardrobe. I genuinely don't own a single black or white t-shirt.

Next up: Do I own it already, and is this purchase unproductive?

I went through my wardrobe and dug out a ZARA leather-look bomber jacket, only to be humbled by the tight fit of the sleeves.

At this stage, I'm sold on the Naked Vice jacket. Then I tried on the Target Lily Loves Funnel Neck Jacket in Fudge ($80) and asked myself the final question.

Would I wear it tomorrow?

I wore it to the office the very next day, and thus, this fashion tale has come full circle.

The oversized fit (I'm a size 12-14 and am wearing the S-M), cropped length, funnel neck and deep berry colour all feel current; it's basically every autumn/winter jacket trend in the one item.

I'm loving the concealed zipper, waist-cinching toggles and front and side pockets. Plus, the polyurethane (PU) outer material feels really soft and buttery, but it's not too heavy. I'll be styling this with my bias midi skirt uniform, and wearing it over the top of knits once it gets colder.
