The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have announced their newborn son’s name – and they’ve stuck to tradition.

The royal announcement came on Friday morning.

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles” a statement from Kensington Palace read.

It went on to say the baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge.

Louis is not only Prince George’s middle name, but also that of Prince William. It is believed that the name comes from Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh’s uncle Lord Louis Mountbatten.

The newest royal arrived at 11.01am on April 23 and joins big brother Prince George, four, and sister Princess Charlotte, two.

Ever noticed the Duchess of Cambridge does a lot of kneeling? Here’s why. Post continues.

As always with a royal baby, was plenty of speculation as to what the little prince would be called. Albert, James, Arthur, Philip, Fred, Thomas and Edward all top picks for betters. Jack is even up there thanks to Prince William’s slip of the tongue that basically gave away the sex of the baby earlier this month.

Some royal fans pointed out that because of the day he was born, George would have been the perfect name  – except they already used it on their eldest son.

You see, April 23 just so happens to be St George’s Day –  the feast day for the patron saint of England and the protector of the royal family. His cross even makes up part of the Union Jack on the British flag.

The Prince’s arrival was announced by Kensington Palace in a statement earlier.

“Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 1101hrs. The baby weighs 8 lbs 7oz [3.8kg],” it said.

“The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.

“Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.”
