The Stan Original Documentary Revealed: Killjoy provides a compelling exploration of family violence in Australia, through the eyes of a child.
The upcoming documentary recounts the harrowing true story of Kathryn Joy, who was only three months old when their father killed their mother.
Kathryn's father was found "not guilty" of murder, and served just 22 months in prison for manslaughter. When he returned from prison, Kathryn returned to live with him at the very house where the tragedy occurred, unaware of the dark history that surrounded their childhood.
"It's not like people didn't know that we were growing up in the house where our mother was killed, with the man that killed her," Kathryn says in the newly released Stan trailer.
"I've always wanted to know what happened, how it happened, why it happened. Like somehow I can make it better," they said in the trailer.
Spanning over four decades, Revealed: KillJoy follows Kathryn's journey from childhood to adulthood as they seek to uncover the truth about their mother's life and death. This poignant documentary confronts the psychological challenges Kathryn faces, illustrating their evolving relationship with their mother's memory while becoming a passionate activist for change.
"In many ways, this film feels like a love letter to my mother, and to those whose lives she touched. I'm so grateful to have been given the space to tell a story that she exists within, a story where she has not been erased. It has been a beautiful opportunity to know her more deeply, and to grieve her collectively," Kathryn reflects on the film's significance.
