"You're being a Karen." Piers Morgan's bizarre new interview with Kanye 'Ye' West.

For one hour and 40 minutes, shock jock British commentator Piers Morgan and Kanye 'Ye' West had what can only be described as a bizarre back-and-forth rant. 

Taking place this week on Sky News' Piers Morgan Uncensored, Morgan said his aim for the interview was to give West a platform to explain himself and not "soundbite" him. 

For context, West's recent actions have been met with condemnation. After fellow rapper, Sean 'Diddy' Combs sent a private message to Kanye, pleading for him to "stop" after West unveiled his 'White Lives Matter' t-shirts at his Paris Fashion Show, West accused Diddy of being controlled by Jewish people.

West was recently removed from social media platforms following these anti-Semitic statements.

Following on from Morgan's interview with West, here are the main takeaways, as well as the reactions from the public and Kim Kardashian's statement on the matter.

What was discussed in the Kanye interview.

In the interview, West said: "I am a person that is classified as Black, I classify myself as Jew. I want to prove that first of all I am Jew also. Do your research on it. We have got our culture ripped from us."

Further in the interview, he then went on to say further anti-Semitic statements, using ableist slurs repetitively, and projected grandiose ideas of himself – hinting all that he says is "directly from God".

He then suggested his aim is "to go to war" and the only way to do so is through his money.

"I'm rich. I'm going to war. I don't have endless resources – I only have maybe $120 million in my account. I have to fight right now."

He then later clarified that he is a "multi-billionaire", when Morgan only referred to him as a "billionaire".

When asked to explain the reasoning behind his hurtful comments, West said: "It's not racism [referring to his anti-Semitic statements and White Lives Matter t-shirts], I was in a position where I was hurt and this was the way I had the right to express myself."

"There was a lack of sophistication in my wording – I said I was sleepy and it was taken in a way that I didn't mean. I will say I'm sorry for the people I hurt... Hurt people hurt people, and I was hurt." 

West then suggested "there's nobody that gets judged more than a straight white male".

"The straight while male has the least amount of a platform to even speak. A straight white male can't say my wife hurt me today. Because people will say you're hurting women. A straight white male can't say 'a Black employee didn't come in to work on time.' Because people will say 'you're racist.' A straight white male can't speak on a homosexual person because people will say you're homophobic."

Halfway through the interview, things began to get seriously heated. West went on to yell at Morgan calling him a "Karen" and a "boy". West also mistakenly called Morgan "Chris" throughout the interview and had periods of unwarranted laughter.

"I'm not a Karen," Morgan responded. "I'm not going to cancel you and I’m not going to un-censor you. I'm simply going to challenge you on what you're saying."

As for West's statements on his ex-wife Kim Kardashian, he said when asked if he wants to get back with her: "Those thirst traps are still fire." 

He continued: "I may be divorced on paper but I'm not divorced of the idea of being the protector. Her name is no longer West. And my name is now only Ye. If we were ever to be together again, what would our name be? Kimye? I will love her for life, and oddly enough I will protect her."

The reaction.

Following the interview, West has been criticised for his statements.

Morgan and more widely, Sky News, have also been criticised for allowing the interview to occur in the first place, given West's assumed mental state.

In both the Piers Morgan Uncensored interview and the one with Tucker Carlson last week, viewers noted that West's answers were not coherent, weaving between paranoia, biblical references and grandiose thoughts of himself. 

As for West's apology of sorts regarding his anti-Semitic comments, viewers felt it did not go far enough.

Kim Kardashian's statement. 

Following all the recent news, Kardashian released a statement via her Instagram story this week to condemn the hate speech occurring against the Jewish community.

"Hate speech is never OK or excusable. I stand together with the Jewish community and call on the terrible violence and hateful rhetoric towards them to come to an immediate end," she said to her 332 million followers.

Other members of the Kardashian-Jenner family have also spoken out against West's comments, with Khloé Kardashian the first to repost a viral story declaring her support for the Jewish community.

"I support my Jewish friends and the Jewish people," the Instagram Story read. Kris, Kendall and Kylie Jenner also re-shared the post to their social media.

The fallout.

Following the public's reaction, multiple sponsors and brands affiliated with West have pulled the plug on their deals.

This week, Adidas, the German sneaker giant whose collaboration with West's company, Yeezy, has been estimated to be worth billions, has said their partnership was "under review". This passive response has been met with further backlash, given West recently said during a podcast interview: "I can say antisemitic things and Adidas can't drop me."

In other fashion news, the parent company of luxury fashion house Balenciaga, told Women's Wear Daily last week that it has severed ties with West. A spokesperson for Vogue also told Page Six last week that it and its editor-in-chief Anna Wintour does not intend to work with him in the future. 

Following on, the film and television studio MRC announced on Monday that it would not distribute a recently completed documentary on West due to his comments, saying it could not "support any platform that amplifies his platform".

In a statement, the filmmakers said: "The silence from leaders and corporations when it comes to Kanye or antisemitism in general is dismaying but not surprising."

He has also been dropped by major talent agency CAA. They have represented the rapper since 2016, and made the decision after his recent outbursts.

As of yet, West has not commented on the loss of these partnership deals.
