It starts mid-afternoon.

Your makeup looks a little patchy. Your skin feels tight, and somehow both oily and dry at the same time (?). You catch your reflection on your phone camera and wonder how your complexion went from looking fine in the morning to the complete opposite a few hours later.

Is it your skincare? Is it your hormones? Is it your lack of sleep?

But what if it's not you and instead, it's the air you're sitting in for eight hours a day?

Welcome to the reality of 'office air'.

Between aggressive air conditioning, recycled airflow and low humidity, most office environments are basically the opposite of what your skin wants. Instead of supporting your skin barrier, they leave your face dehydrated, irritated and, over time, more prone to breakouts and sensitivity.

"Office air" is a TikTok term, but according to Dr Emily Forward, Associate Dermatologist FACD, the effects behind it are very real.

"It describes the typical indoor office environment, including air conditioning or heating, low humidity, recycled air with limited ventilation, and exposure to indoor pollutants like dust or cleaning chemicals," she explained.

This results in your skin looking tired before you do. RIP.

"This can impact the skin by increasing transepidermal water loss, leading to dehydration and disruption of the skin barrier," Dr Forward said. "As a result, skin can feel tight, look dull, and become more sensitive or reactive."

So… what can you actually do about it?

Well, the good news is you don't need to overhaul your entire routine or carry a 10-step skincare kit into the office. As someone who fears office air, I've built my skincare routine around protecting my skin from it.

Here are a few targeted swaps (and desk-friendly habits) that can truly make a noticeable difference.

1. Prioritise barrier repair (not just hydration).

Hydrating products are great, but if your skin barrier is compromised, that hydration won't stick around.

Look for ingredients like ceramides, panthenol and fatty acids to help strengthen and seal.

IMO, K-beauty does this exceptionally well. My two favourite products for this are:

Dr. Althea 147 Barrier Cream, $37.75.

I first fell in love with the Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream (great for breakout-prone skin) a few years ago and stumbled across the 147 version when I was searching for an everyday lightweight moisturiser that delivered incredible hydration.

It's specifically designed to support your skin barrier, which is basically what keeps moisture in and all the bad stuff out (aka, office air).

The name isn't random, either: 1 refers to one key soothing ingredient (azulene), 4 is for four types of ceramides to strengthen the barrier, and 7 is a blend of seven hydrating ingredients, so yep, it's very much focused on repair and hydration.

ZEROID Intensive Cream, $30.61.

ZEROID is a brand that hasn't fully blown up outside of Korea yet, but it is definitely starting to get more recognition in the Western world, and I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a lot bigger very soon.

I owe my life to the Intensive Cream because it literally saves me every time my skin barrier is wreaking havoc. If you have overly dry or sensitive skin, this is the perfect pick for a moisturiser.

It was actually recommended to me by a dermatologist when I was in Korea, which tells you everything you need to know. It's packed with ceramides to properly repair your skin barrier (not just sit on top of it), and it's one of the few creams that can take your skin from irritated and reactive back to normal in a couple of days.

Even though it's quite rich, it still sits well under makeup without pilling, which, from a lot of experience, is very rare for something this nourishing.

2. Layer lightweight hydration throughout the day.

One of the best investments you can make is in a facial mist or essence. This type of product can bring your skin back to life mid-afternoon, especially when you're sitting under a blasting air-con vent.

I've tried a lot of face mists, but I'm currently loving these:

d'Alba White Truffle First Spray Serum, $42.

The d'Alba White Truffle First Spray Serum has been around forever in the K-beauty world, and people still swear by it. In fact, it was one of the first face mists to properly go viral globally.

You do have to shake it before you use it (it separates into layers), so you're getting a mix of hydration and a touch of oil in one spritz. And no, it won't make your makeup slide off.

And ICYMI, it's also known as a product Korean flight attendants swear by — which, if you ask me, is a pretty solid endorsement. If it can handle plane air, it can definitely handle your office.

Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream Mist, $26.03.

If your skin is on the drier side, the Dr. Althea face mist is a bit more substantial than the d'Alba one mentioned above.

It's a milky mist, so it feels more like a really light lotion in spray form rather than just water. It sits nicely over makeup without making everything slide around, and actually takes the edge off that tight, dry feeling.

It also comes in two sizes — 60ml and 100ml — so I keep the smaller one in my handbag and the bigger one on my desk.

3. Don't skip SPF (yes, even indoors!).

Yep, even in the office you still need sunscreen!

Between UV exposure through windows and blue light from screens, your skin is still under a lot of stress. Plus, a hydrating sunscreen can also act as a bit of a protective layer, helping to reduce moisture loss throughout the day.

Just make sure you're using a broad-spectrum SPF that meets Australian standards (look for TGA-approved formulations and at least SPF 30 or higher), so you know you're actually getting proper protection.

4. Rethink your makeup.

If your base looks flawless in the morning but is cracking by 3pm, it's probably your office air.

Swap matte, long-wear formulas for more skin-like, hydrating finishes. You'll also want to invest in a good setting spray. Two of my all-time favourite products are:

IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream SPF50, $82.

Image: Supplied/Juna Xu.

I know 'hate' is a very strong word to use, but I really do hate foundation. It always feels heavy and makes my skin look worse by the end of the day, especially in office air. So, on the days when I need a bit more coverage than a few dots of concealer, this is the product I'll actually wear instead.

It gives you a lot more coverage than you'd expect, but still somehow looks like skin. It's also packed with ingredients like hyaluronic acid for hydration, plus niacinamide and peptides, which make a huge difference when you're sitting in air-con all day.

So Natural All Day Tight Makeup Setting Fixx spray, $16.95.

Trust me when I say this is a better dupe for the Urban Decay All Nighter. The mist is INSANELY fine. It feels like a soft, weightless veil compared to Urban Decay's spray. It settles perfectly in seconds without leaving droplets or a sticky film. And, there's no overpowering scent, which gets a massive tick of approval from me.

But the real selling point is the wear. Actually, it's kind of ridiculous. It locks my makeup in for 12+ hours — from sitting in an air-conditioned office all day, to a midday workout, to dinner after work. My foundation doesn't budge (even around my smile lines), and everything just stays exactly where it should be.

5. Hydration starts from the inside.

I know you've heard it time and time again, but drink your water (especially when you're at work), and your skin will thank you!
