Few fashion trends are as divisive as double denim, but when done right, pairing two pieces (or sometimes three!) can have a major impact.

I know, I know, your memory most likely takes you back tothatJustin Timberlake and Britney Spears moment, but trust me, in 2024 double denim is not what it used to be. (Fun fact to make you feel ancient: they served that look back in 2001. Yep, 23 yearrrrrs ago!)

Watch: Iconic Denim Outfits. Post continues below.

Now, double denim has become a chic uniform that can be thrown on with little thought.

There are, however, some tips you can follow so you don't end up feeling silly or looking like you've time-travelled from the early noughties.

DO: Choose complementary washes.

Double denim often goes wrong when people experiment with multiple different washes. That doesn't mean that each piece has to be the exact same shade, just avoid pairing a dark wash jean with a light wash jacket. Keep it within the same family.

DON'T: Overdo distressing.

I hate to sound like your grandma, but too much distressed denim can look overwhelming. Strike a balance by incorporating one distressed piece into your outfit and keeping the rest clean and polished. It'll also save you from looking like you were in a fight.

DO: Layer wisely.

Layering is key to mastering double denim. Break up the denim-on-denim look by adding non-denim pieces like a crisp white shirt, a cosy knit jumper, or a statement belt for dimension and contrast.

DON'T: Over-saturate with accessories.

Accessories can be a great way to dress up an outfit, but denim rarely needs dressing up. When wearing double denim, keep everything else relatively minimal to allow the outfit to be the focal point. Instead of wearing a statement necklace, pick out a dainty pair of earrings instead. It's all about balance.

DO: Play with proportions.
