4 ways to make your outfits look classy without being...boring.

There is a fine line between dressing classy and dressing boring

You see, outfits that are sophisticated and refined usually lack the elements that make them fun.

Instead of vibrant pinks and greens, it’s muted browns and greys, and rather than statement jewellery, everything is dainty and delicate.

If you’re falling asleep just by reading the above description, then here’s the silver lining: Classy outfits can be worn for years and years. So even if your outfit is more paired back, you won't cringe in 20 years when you look at photos of your younger self.

Also, as someone who prefers to dress classically, you can definitely incorporate colour and fun elements into your wardrobe — it’s just how you do it that makes the biggest difference.

So, here are some things that can make a classic outfit fun so you can get joy from getting dressed in the morning.

If you’re wearing colour, wear the same colour from top to bottom.

This is for all of you who love to wear colour. I get it, a bright hue just makes life a little better, and who wants to wear monochrome all day, every day? (Me, but that doesn’t count).

The most classic way to wear colour is to keep it the same shade throughout. For example, if you’re wearing red, then opt for red trousers, a red knit and red heels. It sounds baffling now, but trust me, the result is a sophisticated look that seems like you put a lot more effort into it than you actually did.

Follow the rule of thirds.

The rule of thirds says that the proportion of your outfits should look something like this: The top half should be ⅓ and the bottom should be ⅔. This way, everything looks balanced and in proportion. A few ways to utilise this rule is to tuck your shirt into your pants to create a short one-third on top or by wearing a pair of high-waisted trousers with a cropped top. Other methods include pairing loose and fitted pieces together, so if one part of the outfit has a ton of volume, then the rest should be form-fitting.

Wear statement jewellery — just don’t go nuts.

Statement earrings, a belt or even a handbag is a great way to dress up an outfit, just try not to go too overboard with it. I always like to choose one stand-out accessory, so if I’m wearing chunky jewellery, I’ll choose a smaller handbag, but if I’ve decided to go with a statement belt, then I keep everything else fairly minimal.

Mix and match patterns and textures.

Believe it or not, texture makes a massive difference to an outfit. For example, silk will instantly make you appear more luxe, while leather will add edge. Mixing textures and patterns is a great way to create intrigue, and it helps to create contrast and vibrancy in an outfit.

A few textures that go well together are denim and satin; and cashmere and leather. As for patterns? That's totally up to you! I like to pair chunky and more understated patterns together, for example, florals and polka dots. Have fun with it!
