Ever since HBO announced it would be returning to Privet Drive, the rumour mill has been spinning fast. The biggest name caught in the crossfire? Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy, who has topped fan-casting polls for Lord Voldemort for months. The original Voldemort, Ralph Fiennes, even hinted at the news.

But if you were hoping for a Peaky Blinders take on the Dark Lord, I have some news that might sting.

Speaking to The Times this week, Murphy officially put the rumours to rest, stating bluntly that he is "categorically not" playing the role. Consider our hearts slightly broken, but our curiosity fully piqued.

While the search for the ultimate villain continues, the rest of the Hogwarts roster is officially coming together, and it's giving us a lot to talk about. By dedicating one full season to each of J.K. Rowling's seven books, HBO is promising to explore those intricate subplots and niche characters that the films simply didn't have the runtime to embrace.

Even the original stars are passing the torch with grace. Daniel Radcliffe told the press he was excited for a new generation to have their own Harry.

"I'll be able to enjoy it with everyone else possibly, with a slightly different perspective. It's a nice thing that a whole new generation is going to get introduced to the stories in a new way," he told Variety.

Harry Potter.

Dominic McLaughlin has been cast as Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived. McLaughlin previously appeared in the Sky comedy Grow alongside Nick Frost, and he's now stepping into the iconic glasses once worn by Daniel Radcliffe.

It's a massive mantle to take on, but with that main character energy already radiating from his early stills, we're ready to see him make the role his own.

Ron Weasley.

Alastair Stout will play the loyal, red-headed Ron Weasley. This role marks Stout's professional acting debut, making him a true discovery by the casting team.

Visually, he's a total ringer for a young Rupert Grint, capturing that classic Weasley charm and slightly bewildered energy we all know and love.

Hermione Granger.

Arabella Stanton is the new Hermione Granger, the brightest witch of her age. Stanton comes to the series with some serious theatre kid prestige, having recently starred as the lead in Matilda the Musical on the West End.

Taking over the mantle from Emma Watson, she's set to bring a fresh mix of musicality, wit, and that signature Hermione determination to the screen.

Albus Dumbledore.

The legendary John Lithgow stars as Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. A multi-award winner known for The Crown and Dexter, Lithgow brings a commanding yet whimsical energy to the role of Harry's greatest mentor.

He's already noted that this role will likely be the "last major chapter" of his distinguished career — no pressure, then.

Severus Snape.

Paapa Essiedu, the breakout star of I May Destroy You, takes on the complex and brooding Severus Snape. Essiedu has the massive task of following the late Alan Rickman's definitive performance.

Fans are already bracing themselves for his wickedly smart and casually cruel interpretation of the Potions Master. We're here for it!

Minerva McGonagall.

Two-time Oscar nominee Janet McTeer will play the formidable Minerva McGonagall.

Known for her work in Ozark and Tumbleweeds, McTeer inherits the role of the Transfiguration professor and Head of Gryffindor from the legendary Dame Maggie Smith. 

Rubeus Hagrid.

In a move that truly delighted the internet, Nick Frost has been cast as the half-giant Rubeus Hagrid. The Shaun of the Dead star brings a natural warmth and perfect comedic timing to the role of the Hogwarts gamekeeper, succeeding the beloved Robbie Coltrane.

It's the kind of casting that just feels like a warm hug.

Draco Malfoy.

Lox Pratt will play Harry's schoolyard rival, Draco Malfoy. Pratt is also set to lead the new adaptation of Lord of the Flies, proving he has the requisite edge to play the prejudiced and arrogant Slytherin student. We're ready to love to hate him.

Molly Weasley.

The heart of the Burrow is found in Katherine Parkinson, who takes over the role of the fierce and loving Weasley matriarch.

Known for her impeccable comedic timing in The IT Crowd and recent dramatic turns in Rivals, Parkinson brings a vibrant, relatable energy to Molly — a character famously originated by Julie Walters. Expect big knitwear and even bigger heart.

The Harry Potter series is currently in active production at Leavesden Studios in the UK. While we're all dying for a date to put in our calendars, HBO executives have targeted an early 2027 release window. It feels like a long wait, but good things come to those who don't use a Time-Turner.
