There is a certain genre of show on screens right now that is scratching an itch I had no idea I had.

If I had to describe it, I'd say they fall into the 'chaotic friendship group sitcom' category that was at its peak in the 90s and early 2000s, with a new Gen Z-ified spin. Think: Friends, Sex And The City, How I Met Your Mother and Seinfeld, just worlds more unhinged. Perfect!

First there was Overcompensating, the brainchild of comedian Benito Skinner. It stars a group of "college" students (the joke is very much that they're not, in fact, 22), as they navigate the mess that comes with finding a friendship group and also yourself.

Then came Not Suitable For Work, a series by Mindy Kaling about a group of boys and girls living next door to each other in New York, entering the corporate world after their college years.

And recently I stumbled across what could be my favourite of the bunch, with a second season out on August 27.

Allow me to introduce you to Adults on Disney+.

This is the type of show that I initially raised an eyebrow at. Did we really need another version of the same style of show? I'm already overwhelmed with my growing watch list!

Well, apparently yes, yes we absolutely did.

This group of early 20-somethings are constantly pushing the boundaries of 'how far is too far' and there is simply so much going on at one time that it is impossible to get bored. Every episode has me laughing out loud while simultaneously wiping my sweaty palms because of the amount of sheer awkwardness and anxiety-inducing situations the characters find themselves in.

What I especially love about this show is that it adopts the classic formula of every sitcom I've grown up on. Rather than modern shows that do a deep dive into one or two plot points throughout the series, Adults takes the approach of multiple storylines that change each episode, so you really could just pick up any point if you wanted to.

It follows a group of five young Gen Z adults living (without permission) in the New York home of one of the housemates' parents as they travel around the country. In the newly released prequel, we see how they met the newest addition, Paul Baker, during a very chaotic episode where one housemate more or less forges the New York marathon.

Through nine episodes, the group find each other in what we can call unique predicaments, from mooning new employers to emergency colonoscopies. It is fair to say I well and truly did not see what was coming at any one time. The first scene of the (now) second episode had my mouth truly hanging agape. AGAPE.

The overall story is laced with romance and evolving friendships and all the things that come naturally with living through your twenties in a modern era, all the while pretending as if you have any one clue about life and where it's headed.

Adults introduces a crew of new faces to our screens, but you may recognise Owen Thiele, who plays Anton, from his appearance in Overcompensating as well as his popular podcast, In Your Dreams. Jack Innanen, who plays the famously fluid Paul Baker, found his fame making comedy sketches on TikTok before his debut in Big Mistakes. Amita Rao, Lucy Frayer and Malik Elassal make up the rest of the group, whose chemistry makes for a completely mismatched (in the best way) and awkward (in the awkward way) share-house dynamic.

The first season cements the characters' personalities. For example, Samir as the wannabe 'mum friend' and Issa as the completely unpredictable friend that you probably wouldn't invite to brunch, and leaves us on a small cliffhanger about how the group is about to shift given recent… progressions. No spoilers!
