"She would’ve been best friends with Meghan." Prince Harry on wishing his mother was here.

The announcement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement today is making all of us pause, forget about the current plague of grotesque news, and allow ourselves to feel warm and happy and a little bit hopeful about a match that has withstood plenty and remained seemingly pure.

Prince Harry, 33, says there’s another person, his mother Diana, who is most definitely “jumping up and down with excitement” at the pending nuptials. She’s just doing so “somewhere else”.

“It’s days like today when I really miss having her around and miss sharing the happy news,” he said in a video released by The Royal Family today.

Diana, Princess of Wales, was killed in a car crash when Prince Harry was 12. It was August of 1997 and the tragedy catapulted Harry, alongside his brother William who is three years his senior, into the public spotlight.

Today, in discussing his engagement, Prince Harry said he's "sure she's with us" and would be thrilled with the addition of Meghan, 36, to the family.

"They [Diana and Meghan] would be thick as thieves, without question," Prince Harry said. "She would be over the moon jumping up and down so excited for me. And then, she would’ve probably been best friends with Meghan."

"I'm sure she's with us, and jumping up and down somewhere else."

The ring Prince Harry gave Meghan has three stones. One from Botswana in Africa - where the couple first holiday'd together - and two from his mother's jewellery collection.

"The diamonds on either side [of the middle stone] are from my mother's jewellery collection to make sure she's with us on this crazy journey together," he said.

Meghan said the ring's meaning, as well as the way she's been welcomed into Prince Harry's family, have helped her feel closer to Diana.

"Not being able to meet his mum, it's important to me to know that she's a part of this with us," Meghan said in the video. "Being able to meet Harry's aunts and the different people who were so important to his mum, I am able to - in some way - know a part of her through them and, of course, through him."

Prince Harry and Meghan are planning a wedding for Spring 2018. They said the engagement, which occurred earlier in November, took place over a roast chicken dinner during a cosy night in.
