'I can't find my sister': Witnesses describe horror of Turkey airport attack.

Witnesses have described the horror of the moment three attackers opened fire and blew themselves up at Turkey’s main airport in Istanbul, killing at least 36 people and injuring at least 90.

Officials say the men, wearing suicide vests, sprayed gunshots through Istanbul’s Ataturk airport, before detonating their suicide vests.

A woman told AFP she can’t find her sister after the attack.

“Somebody came and shot at us and then my sister was running,” Otfah Mohamed Abdullah said.

“I don’t know which way she was running and after that I was falling down. I was on the ground till he finished… I can’t find my sister.”

The death toll is feared to rise above 50.

South African man Paul Roos told Reuters he was just 50 metres away when one of the attackers started “randomly firing at anyone coming in front of him”.

“He was wearing all black. His face was not masked… We ducked behind a counter but I stood up and watched him. Two explosions went off shortly after one another.

“By that time he had stopped shooting. He turned around and started coming towards us. He was holding his gun inside his jacket.

“He looked around anxiously to see if anyone was going to stop him and then went down the escalator… we heard some more gunfire and then another explosion, and then it was over.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is urgently seeking to determine whether any Australians have been affected.

“I understand the Turkish authorities have secured the area of the attack and have advised that Ataturk Airport will be closed for up to 48 hours,” a statement read this morning.

DFAT’s travel advice for those travelling to Turkey has been updated since the attack, warning Australians to exercise a high degree of caution.

The nature of the attacks suggest they may be linked to Islamic State, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: “The bombs that exploded in Istanbul today could have gone off at any airport in any city around the world”.

All flights to and from the airport have been cancelled.

Video from the scene purportedly shows the moment one of the attackers ran through airport arrivals terminal, before being struck by a police bullet.
