'I'm a beauty writer. Here's what I'll be doing (and not doing) for my skin in winter.'

I’m a winter girlie at heart. Crisp air? Love it. Winter fashion? Obsessed. Snuggling inside in an oversized fleece robe, with a cup of Milo and a good book? I can’t think of anything better.

But, as much as I adore the winter vibes, I know my skincare game can take a hit if I don’t make the necessary tweaks to my routine.

The combination of cold weather, low humidity and artificial indoor heating can leave skin feeling seriously dry, tight and dull.

Over the years, I’ve learned a thing or two about the dos and don’ts of winter skincare. So, here are some of the things I’ll be doing (and not doing) to keep my skin hydrated, healthy and happy this winter.

1. Cancelling steaming hot showers

There’s nothing quite like a steaming hot shower on a cold winter day. They truly hit different. But, hot showers can strip the skin of its natural oils.

Stripping your skin of natural oils is essentially messing up the way your skin naturally protects itself from the harsh winter elements – a big no. So instead, I’ll be having warm showers (reluctantly) and using Jergens Pure Hydration 24hr Moisturiser to lock in my skin’s hydration.

That brings me to the next thing on my list.

2. Applying moisturiser immediately after a shower

Though I romanticise winter, I know getting ready in the morning can be a real struggle. Once I’m out of the shower, I’m cold again, and on top of that, my skin is more prone to losing moisture and drying out.

But that won’t be my story this winter because I’ll be using Jergens Pure Hydration 24hr Moisturiser as soon as I'm out of the shower. It’s an absolute game-changer, packed with nourishing and hydrating ingredients like glycerin, coconut oil and shea butter, that lock in moisture and deeply hydrate the skin.

Its luxurious creamy texture feels incredible and melts right in, providing all day hydration. Plus, it's cruelty-free formula contains 100 per cent plant-based moisturisers and is vegan. The formula is also free from parabens and dyes, and has been dermatologist tested.

My fave bit: it’s exclusive to Priceline, making it incredibly convenient to pick up alongside my other winter beauty essentials.

3. Matching my skincare products to the seasons

As the seasons change, so does our skin’s needs. Just like our transition from airy dresses to cosy sweaters, our skincare routines require some adjustments too.

To cater to my skin’s needs, I’ll swap out my lightweight products for richer, more hydrating ones. In the winter I often reach for more hydrating cleansers and serums with ceramides. I also indulge in heavy moisturisers to give my skin the extra nourishment it tends to crave.

And, because I’m extra (and I know my skin will thank me for it), I always add facial oils and overnight hydrating lip masks to my routine for an added boost of hydration.

4. Double cleansing

Making sure my skin is thoroughly cleansed and prepped for the rest of my skincare products is so important, especially when using heavier products as I don’t want to clog up my pores.

To start, I’ll use an oil-based cleanser to maintain my skin's natural oils, and then I follow up with a toasty warm muslin cloth to remove any remaining makeup or product.

Next, I use a foaming cleanser to eliminate any impurities lingering on my skin. This ensures that my skin is properly cleansed and hydrated, allowing the rest of my skincare products to work even better.

This extra TLC for my skin during winter is crucial to keeping my skin supple and hydrated skin.

5. Absolutely NOT skipping sunscreen

While many people associate sunscreen with hot summer days, the truth is that protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is essential year-round.

Even during the winter months, the sun's rays can still cause damage to your skin, especially in Australia where the UV index is particularly high. So, this winter, I’ll be wearing a SPF30+ or higher sunscreen. It's a non-negotiable part of my skincare routine.
