When I heard an interview on the radio the other day with Willow Smith’ s stylist, I had one of those WTF moments. I’d just come back from Papua New Guinea where kids don’t have shoes or medicine and I’m listening to the fact that the 9 year old daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith has a stylist. A stylist. A. Styl. Ist.

Yahoo breathlessly reports:

To me, this isn’t an issue of what she’s wearing. I don’t think she’s dressed particularly provocatively. This is about the fact that someone (her parents!) have decided to comodify their child. To pay a professional thousands of dollars to create a ‘look’ for a 9 year old. How contrived is that? How indulged is that? How utterly BANANAS is that?
