It’s a sad reality that no teenage girl is immune to body insecurities.
And Kylie Jenner has just come out and proved that she, just like all of us, has suffered through self-doubt.
The 19-year-old reality star is now famous for her Snapchats, hair colour changes and of course — those plump lips that led to the creation of her Kylie Lip Kits product line.
Two years ago Jenner would deny she got lip injections, instead insisting the secret to her fuller pout was lip liner. She later admitted she began getting fillers at age 16.
She has now told Complex magazine the reason she was driven to get lip fillers was because of a long-held insecurity that took its toll in her early teen years.
“It has been an insecurity of mine all my life,” she said, before recalling the moment a boy’s thoughtless remark crushed her.
“This guy I kissed was all like, ‘Your lips are really small but you’re a really good kisser. I didn’t think you were gonna be good at kissing’,” she said.
“It was so rude. From then on, I just felt like I saw guys staring at my lips. I felt like no one wanted to kiss me.”
Jenner revealed she originally chose to fib about getting fillers because she feared how she would be judged as a role model to young girls.
“What if I came out and said, ‘Oh, yeah, I got my lips done’? What are all those mums going to think about me? These kids, my fans, they’re going to think I’m crazy. I didn’t want to be a bad influence.
“I didn’t want people to think you had to get your lips done to feel good about yourself.”
Now, she regrets having hid the truth.
“They thought it was crazier that I was lying about it because it was so obvious. I wish I had just been honest and upfront.”
Jenner told Complex she “went too far” at first with the injections, admitting she tried to go too big and it just ended up being “very painful”.
She said she had since toned it down, and emphasised she had never undergone permanent plastic surgery.
“It’s annoying to hear every day that you’re just this fake, plastic person when you’re not. Every single day there was a news story about me.”
Jenner admits that she got carried away with the injections. “When you first get them done, you’re like, ‘Oh, it could be a little bit bigger on that side.’ I’d go back and be like, ‘They went down’ and think they could be bigger. But I went too far. It was very painful.”
Jenner still gets the injections but says she doesn’t go overboard anymore, noting that she never had permanent plastic surgery. “It’s annoying to hear every day that you’re just this fake, plastic person when you’re not. Every single day there was a news story about me.”
