Kim, 36, and Kanye, 40, announced they were planning to use a surrogate to welcome their third child earlier this year after multiple doctors warned Kim that falling pregnant a third time was not a safe or viable option for her.

"You getting pregnant again would be a high-risk pregnancy," her fertility expert confirmed during a recent episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians.

"We're always worried about the next serious complication," another doctor warned.

The reality star suffered from placenta accreta and preeclampsia throughout her pregnancies with four-year-daughter North and 19-month-old son Saint.

While sister Kourtney and Khloe both offered to be Kim's surrogate, in June TMZ claimed the couple had employed a surrogate through an agency for an estimated AU$149,000. This includes an AU$91,000 deposit with the surrogacy agency and a further AU$59,000 that will be paid to the surrogate in 10 instalments.

The surrogate, believed to be a San Diego mother in her late 20s, will be required to follow a strict series of rules that includes refraining from smoking, drinking and using drugs during the pregnancy.

"She also agrees to restrict sexual activities in the weeks leading up to the pregnancy, including foregoing sexual intercourse for three weeks following embryo implantation," TMZ reports.

"The surrogate cannot go in hot tubs or saunas, cannot handle or change cat litter, apply hair dye, drink more than one caffeinated beverage per day or eat raw fish."

Should the surrogate carry multiple babies, a bonus of AU $6,200 per child is available.

Congratulations, Kim and Kanye.
