Friends, the winter wedding season is officially upon us.

And although I curated this winter wedding guest dress shopping edit for you, it's also for me because I've got a wedding next weekend and I really don't want to carry around a jacket.

Best winter wedding guest dresses under $150.

Let's recap common wedding guest dress codes and what they actually mean:

• Black tie wedding guest dresses = A floor-length gown, or a maxi/midi-length dress in a luxe fabric.

• Cocktail wedding guest dresses = Neither formal nor casual; a maxi or midi-length dress is always a safe bet.

• Semi-formal wedding guest dresses = Elevated casual; you could wear a shorter dress, a lower heel or more of a daytime print.

This season, I'm seeing a lot of wedding guest dresses with statement sleeves, off the shoulder silhouettes, mesh layering, comfy velvet and jersey fabrics, and high necklines with draping.

A long-sleeve dress is the obvious choice if you're keen to leave bulky coats at home, but they're surprisingly hard to find for an evening or more elevated dress code.

My recommendation? Look for a dress you can style up with an on-trend shoe — maybe a thong heel or textured mules — and statement accessories with luxe hardware detailing.

Another tip? Don't lose yourself in a dress code. Whether it's a black-tie reception or a cocktail-style wedding, dress codes are there to guide you rather than serve as a character to cosplay.
