I’m not sure there’s any universe in which a movie made in the 80s about a mannequin that comes to life needs to be recirculated as a parody. But that’s exactly what Carpool Karaoke host James Corden has done with fashion designer and former Spice Girls singer Victoria Beckham.
Yep. The pair have channelled the 1987 comedy Mannequin and created a clip where Beckham is a mannequin that comes to life in Corden’s arms. He falls in love with her, even though she appears a dummy in the presence of anyone else.
(The “that’s not a very nice way to talk about her” joke is repeated too many times in the two-and-a-half minute video.)
The clip is well put-together. The acting is exactly what you’d expect from the late night show host and former pop star. There are too many scenes. It does make you laugh.
But, more than anything, the whole concept – from Corden’s declaration of love, to Beckham’s frozen counterpart – makes you feel very, very uncomfortable. (Which is, perhaps, the point).
The best part?
The ending when the pair are singing Spice Up your Life in Corden’s car, typical Carpool style.
It’s a scene where Beckham loosens up and meets Corden move for move. You forget she is the big-sunglasses-wearing and never-caught-smiling quintessential celebrity, and you realise she likes to car-dance just as much as the rest of us.

This is also the scene that has reportedly upset Beckham’s fellow Spice Girls band mate, Mel B.
The 41-year-old has criticised Beckham, 42, for using Spice Girls material to boost her own profile after spending years distancing herself from the band. Beckham reportedly pulled out of a second Spice Girls reunion tour at the beginning of this year.
If there is any tension, the former Posh Spice is clearly ready to ignore it, posting a clip of the Carpool Karaoke segment to her Instagram with the caption: “Love my Spice Girls”.
