NRL star Trent Merrin and surfer Sally Fitzgibbons have ended their relationship.

After three years together, Trent Merrin and Sally Fitzgibbons have called off their engagement.

According to Danny Weidler’s column in the Sydney Morning Herald, pro surfer Fitzgibbons, 26, recently called off her engagement to Kangaroo and Panthers star Merrin, 27.

Weidler reported that Merrin and Fitzgibbons have not been seen together recently and Fitzgibbons has stopped wearing her engagement ring.

The Penrith Panthers have been aware of the split for a few weeks and Merrin is “coping well”.

After winning the Margaret River Pro in April, Fitzgibbons spoke to The Project about why she wore her engagement ring while surfing.

Fitzgibbons told the show’s panellist Peter Helliar it was because of the distance that was too often between her and Merrin, due to work commitments.

“I don’t really think about it. But my fiance Trent, we have to spend a little time apart, so when I’m in the water it feels like he’s right there,” she said.

“It’s raised a few eyebrows, I guess,” she continued.

“But there’s actually a bit of an insurance policy by default: I’ve busted all my knuckles in surfing and training so they’re quite swollen and I feel like that’s going to keep it on.”

The couple began dating in 2014 and became engaged the following year.
