Two makeup artists share their top beauty tips for women of every age.

There seem to be two types of people in this world: those who have a considerable flair with a makeup brush and those who, well, don’t.

Although some of us will go through life never quite nailing the perfect winged eyeliner or achieving pristine foundation, apparently, not all hope is lost.

Because according to a couple of highly sought-after Melbourne makeup artists, there are small things we can do to make sure we look like we know what we’re doing. Whether it be caring for our skin, focusing on certain parts of the face or investing in a product or two, Amelia Webb and Chantelle Baker – with more than 60,000 followers between them – certainly know their stuff.

Here, Mamamia asks both artists their top five timeless makeup tips for women of all ages and skin types. Interestingly, both women have very, very similar things to say about how to fake-til-you-make-it.

With more than 24,000 Instagram followers, and as Sophie Cachia’s go-to makeup artist, Amelia Webb has become known on her social channels and by her followers for her candid makeup tutorials that predominately lie on Snapchat.

Here’s what she had to say:

1. Skincare is paramount

“Skincare is the most important element of your beauty regime: Understanding your skin, possible problem areas and what is right for your skin type. When you have healthy glowing skin your makeup will be ten times easier to apply and last throughout the entire day.

“I get a lot of my skincare done at Skincare South Yarra in Melbourne. And remember, hydration is key – drink plenty of water daily.”

2. Purchase a quick and easy foundation brush

“Purchase a quick and easy foundation brush for applying your foundation. A buffing brush that applies foundation in seconds and will save you so much time in the morning. Personally, I recommend the Makeup Geelong Ultimate Foundation Brush.”

3. Know how to use concealer

“Apply only a small amount of concealer to any areas that require extra coverage – melting this into your skin with a warm finger. Always make sure you’re using a concealer that is right for your skin type.

“My holy grail is the Nars creamy concealer which has a great colour range.”

4. Black mascara is key

“Open your eyes with a black mascara that adds length and thickness without being clumpy. A couple of coats should go a long way and last throughout the day.”

5. Tints are everything

“Finish your look with a lip tint that can also be used as a cheek tint. This will save you so much time in morning applying the same product to both cheeks and lips. I recommend the Stila Lip and Cheek Stain.”

Chantelle Baker

Chantelle Baker is celebrity artist to the stars, with Rebecca Judd and Jesinta Franklin among her most frequent clients. She has 38,000 Instagram followers and it’s fair to say that she certainly knows her way around a makeup bag or two.

1. Cleanse and moisturise your skin

“Giving your skin a good cleanse every night works wonders. I love a gel cleanser that gets my skin super clean. I then hydrate with a good creamy moisturiser. My go-to products are Dermalogica Super cleansing gel and Creme De La Mer moisturising cream.”

2. Foundation should look like skin

“HEAVY foundation is a big no for me and can look so ageing. It is important to get the right amount of coverage without looking cakey. I’m a big fan of mixing products – use different styles of foundation together. I always blend or buff foundation into the skin using a brush. The result is seamless. My faves are:

  • Sheer Glow by NARS
  • Hourglass tinted foundation
  • M.A.C face & body
  • M.A.C pro long wear waterproof foundation

3. BROWS!

“Brows are such a big trend right now! My tips on keeping yours looking youthful: Invest in a coloured brow mascara, a good pencil and a powder. I use all three in my brow routine for the perfect brow that sits in place. My go-to products are:

  • Loreal Brow Plumper
  • Benefit ‘Goof Proof Brow Pencil’ #3
  • Benefit ‘Gimme Brow’ Fibre gel
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo – Medium Brown

4. Curl your lashes for an instant lift

“My makeup kit ESSENTIAL – Shu Uemura LASH CURLER! Finish with mascara to instantly open your eyes.”

5. Lip stains are versatile

“Cheek and Lip stains are my go-to for that healthy glowing look. I pat it onto the apples of my cheeks and lips. I love Watermelon and Guava from Becca.”

Now go forth and conquer your makeup game, ladies!
