Every time someone talks about something smoothing fine lines or improving dark circles, my eyes tend to roll very far back into my skull. Because the fact of the matter is, things like dark circles are genetic, and most of what topical products can actually achieve comes down to hydrating, plumping, and smoothing.

For this reason, I was never really an eye cream lady. I would generally just use my regular serums and moisturisers and bring the excess formula right up under my eyes. Same thing. Fewer steps. Less money wasted. Then I became a mum.

And suddenly I looked like I hadn't slept in an entire year (because I literally hadn't), and eye creams overnight went from a pretty pointless step to my newest fixation. I've tried all the newest launches — from high-end to budget. And while I've found a few goodies along the way (ahem, this under eye stick is fab), I'm still shamelessly scurrying around for the next best thing.

And look, while I still firmly believe nothing topical can truly emulate the heavy-lifting results of in-clinic treatments, I do believe my eyes need more targeted love than they used to. Something specific and tailored to their current state (dark, crease-y, dry, resembling two ball sacks).

So when a very secret sample of The Ordinary's new Lacto-PDRN 4% + Bg Eye Cream landed on my desk back at the beginning of July, I don't think I've needed a skincare product more in my life.

I've been trialling it for the past month straight, and I have plenty of thoughts I need to sit down and share with you immediately.

What is The Ordinary's new Lacto-PDRN 4% + Bg Eye Cream?

In case you've been asleep, PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide — just try saying it) is the buzzy ingredient that's been dominating the beauty industry right now. You've likely heard of the viral 'salmon sperm' or salmon DNA in-clinic treatments, right? Well, PDRN is the active behind that kind of technology, and it's now migrating into topical creams and serums everywhere you look.

Without getting too far into it (approximately no one is here for a science lesson), PDRN is derived from fish DNA and famous for its ability to encourage skin renewal, repair damaged tissue, and boost elasticity.

But in true fashion, The Ordinary has taken a completely vegan, lab-grown route.

Instead of fish, theirs uses a fish-friendly probiotic bacterium. Sounds gross but, y'know… science.

Priced at just $15.10, the formula pairs this with vitamin B9 (folic acid) to support skin health, alongside a flexible 'shapewear-for-eyes' film designed to physically tighten and lift on contact.

The main claims:

• Immediate lifting & tightening: Visibly lifts drooping eyelids from first use and tightens undereye bags.

• A massive hydration surge: Boosts skin moisture levels by 72 per cent within two hours.

• Long-term smoothing: Clinically proven to reduce under-eye fine lines by 18 per cent after eight weeks.

How did you go with it?

We actually got off to a bit of a rough start. Shortly after I started trialling it, I had a massive eczema flare-up around my eye area (triggered by pure life stress, not the cream itself). Because the skin was compromised, I had to pause the trial and strip my routine right back until it cleared up.

Once my skin barrier recovered and the cream made its way back into my routine, the results were almost instantaneous when it came to hydration and smoothing.

I used it religiously morning and night for over a month. Given how severely dry my entire eye area has been lately (literally tree bark-level), I'm not sure if my skin was just so profoundly thirsty that a dramatic difference was inevitable, but my eye area appeared visibly happier, plumper, and way more hydrated pretty much overnight.

The harshness of my fine lines softened, and the subtle 'shapewear' effect gave my tired lids a much-needed perky look.

The biggest tell for me, though, was my makeup test: my foundation and concealer stopped settling into my crow's feet and fine lines half as much as they usually do throughout the day. Plus, the lightweight texture layered under makeup with zero pilling or greasy residue. We love when this happens!

The verdict.

As part of my job, I try hundreds of skincare products every year, and my baseline expectation for eye creams remains notoriously low. But this is genuinely one of the rare ones I will be re-purchasing with my own money when this tube runs dry.

Did it lift my eyelids? No. If you're expecting a $15 tube to completely remove deep genetic dark circles or erase years of sleep deprivation, you'll be disappointed.

But if you want an affordable, highly active eye cream that instantly tightens crepey lids, deeply quenches dry fine lines, and makes your eyes look refreshed and rested, this little tube deserves a gold star.
