Last Christmas, I'm pretty sure my tween thought every Christmas had arrived at once. Under the tree, in its distinctively neat little box, was a mobile phone — the one thing she's ever said she truly wanted.

Her eyes lit up, her smile widened and there were hugs aplenty. But despite how happy it made her, it still was a hard decision for us to allow it.

This generation has the whole world in their pockets — which is amazing, because tech lets them connect with friends, discover creative outlets, and even access learning and opportunities at the tap of a finger — but it also comes with the weight of the world.

Bullying, scams and exploitation are the dark side of technology — and honestly, that freaks us out. A lot. While we've done everything we can to protect her with controls and limits, it's a relief to know platforms like Snapchat are focused on helping parents and their teens stay safe online by creating resources like The Keys, a guide to digital safety.

The free program helps teens identify potential online risks and equips them with practical strategies to stay safe. The ambition is that after completion, your teens will have a better understanding of the resources and tools available to them, and actions to take if they ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe online. But most importantly, the course reinforces how teens should always raise concerns about online risks to parents or trusted adults and get support if they ever need it.

What is it?

Inspired by a driver's education test — where teens learn the rules in the classroom and then practise in real life — The Keys takes a similar approach to digital safety.

Developed by outside safety experts and reviewed by Snap's Teen Council for Digital Well-Being, the program teaches teens how to spot and respond to online risks. It also presents realistic scenarios to help them navigate some of the more challenging situations they might encounter online.

Why Snapchat created The Keys.

The Keys was created because teens deserve more than just "be careful online" advice.

This program goes further — it gives them real, practical skills to handle the tricky stuff they might run into online. The goal? To help teens feel confident, think critically, and actually know how to stay safe in the digital world.

Who is it for?

The program has been designed for both teenagers and their parents who are navigating online spaces.

This program covers serious topics. It's recommended to be completed with a parent, teacher or trusted adult, allowing teens to ask questions and have follow-up conversations — turning it into a joint learning experience that strengthens communication around digital safety. 

It's so important to know how to keep our kids safe. The Keys has been created to help parents do just that, while Snapchat's Family Center is another in-app parental tool that allows parents to see who their teens are messaging with on Snapchat and manage key settings.

How to use The Keys.

Teens navigate through an interactive interface with videos, reflections, and scenario-based exercises, giving them hands-on experience in responding to potential risks.

The course is broken into two parts, with part one covering the practical side of online risks, including harassment, intimate images, exploitation and drugs, while part two walks through tools, safety settings and resources specific to Snapchat, highlighting key safeguards and tips for staying connected with friends and family safely.

The program is flexible and can be completed in one session or paused and resumed later on.

The benefits are far and wide.

This is the first generation to grow up entirely online, navigating a digital world that's constantly evolving. That makes ongoing conversations with our kids about online life more important than ever.

The Keys isn't a one-and-done course — it's a launch pad, giving teens the skills to spot risks, make safe choices, and start meaningful chats with parents or trusted adults about what's happening in their online world. It equips families to learn together, stay informed, and keep the conversation going as technology — and our kids — grow.
