Serena Williams shares how her daughter's name is a touching nod to Australia.

When Serena Williams and her partner welcomed their daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr on September 1, they gave her a name with two special meanings.

The first was obvious – the tennis champion’s first child was named after her Reddit co-founder dad Alexis Ohanian, in a twist on the trend of naming children after their parents.

However, we’re only just finding out the second meaning a month on, despite it being right in front of us the whole time.

Listen: Serena Williams, Miranda Kerr, Amber Heard, Alison Williams and more are turning to Silicon Valley for their latest squeeze.

Williams, who has confessed she’s “having a hard time” posting about anything other than her daughter on social media, sent out a Tweet on Thursday telling her followers that Alexis Olympia’s name contained a touching nod to Australia.

The 36-year-old was in the very early stages of pregnancy when she won her 23rd grand slam at the Australian Open in January.

And for this reason, Williams wanted her daughter’s initials to reflect that she had a baby on board.

Clever, right?

We’re not the only ones who were impressed by the champ’s ingenuity. The tweet received more than 100,000 likes and was retweeted 20,000 times.

We don’t know for sure if this means the Australian Open is now her favourite of all the grand slams, but it’s nice to know our country has a special place in her heart.
