David Leyonhjelm slams late sports journalist Rebecca Wilson during Senate tribute: reports.

Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm has publicly criticised the late Rebecca Wilson for the second time since news broke of her death.

The 54-year-old sports journalist died at home last week after a long and private battle with breast cancer.

AAP reports Senator Leyonhjelm interrupted a Senate tribute to the columnist on Tuesday, to ask if he could make a statement on the Labor motion acknowledging her contribution to the industry.

The 64-year-old reportedly said a story Wilson wrote last year, which named and shamed football fans, was something nobody should be proud of. He added, “Death does not absolve us of what we did when we were alive.”

The comment comes only days after Senator Leyonhjlem made light of the journalist's upcoming funeral in a hugely offensive tweet.

The Senator tweeted: "Doubt there'll be many #WSW (Western Sydney Wanderers) fans at Rebecca Wilson's funeral #innocentlivesdamaged."

The tweet, posted just hours after her death was made public, referenced the journalist's public naming of football fans allegedly on Australia's banned list for bad behaviour.

The list was said to be mostly filled with supporters of the Western Sydney Wanderers football club.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported Wilson received death threats following her release of the list.

The NSW Senator came under attack for his insensitive remark with users calling for him to resign.

Senator Leyonhjlem is yet to apologise and continues to hold his political role.
