Selena Gomez breaks down while performing a tribute to her murdered friend Christina Grimmie.

Selena Gomez has paid a moving tribute to a close friend, US The Voice star Christina Grimmie, at a Miami concert on Saturday night.

The singer fought back tears as she spoke of her relationship with the 22 year-old, who was shot dead at a meet and greet after her concert in Orlando, Florida.

“When she was 14, we met her and my parents and I signed her,” Selena said.

“One thing about Christina and her family is that she holds her faith so closely to her. And I think it’s not about a religion and it’s not about anything or good deeds.

“It’s just that she had faith, and I don’t really understand how this really happened, but I would like to dedicate this next song to her.”

The 23 year-old then dedicated the Hillsong Worship’s “Transfiguration” to her fallen friend and broke down while performing her song “Nobody”.

In light of security fears, Selena Gomez cancelled her scheduled post-concert meet and greet.

The attack on Christina came just days before a gunmen shot dead at least 50 people and injured dozens more at a nightclub in the same city.

Meanwhile, Selena’s stepfather Brian Teefey, who was Christina’s manager, has set up a GoFundMe page for her family which has already raised more than $94,000.

“Words cannot begin to describe the pain I am feeling,” he writes on the page.

“I learned this business through the eyes of a father and Christina was like a second daughter to me.”

Grimmie shot to fame after appearing on The Voice in 2014, blowing the judges away with her cover of Wrecking Ball in the Blind Auditions. Watch the audition here:
