The rich TV history behind Sam Wood and Snezana Markoski's baby name.

The first-ever Bachie baby has a name that’s right on trend: Willow.

The daughter of Sam Wood and Snezana Markoski shares her name with quite a few other little Aussie girls.

Willow was sitting at number 30 in the popularity charts last year, and has been in the top 100 in Australia since 2009.

In fact, it’s more popular in Australia than in the US (number 96) and the UK (number 51).

Okay, so it’s a nature name. That’s one reason why we love it. We’re loving lots of nature names for girls at the moment. Ivy, Poppy, Hazel, Lily, Holly, Savannah and Summer are all in the top 100.

There’s no doubt Willows are beautiful trees. When the singer Pink named her daughter Willow six years ago, that’s what she was thinking of.

“The willow is my favourite tree,” Pink told People magazine.

“I grew up near one. It is the most flexible tree and nothing can break it – no wind, no elements. It can bend and withstand anything. I love that sentiment and I want that for her.”

Other celebs have called their daughters Willow. Actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith chose the name back in 2000 (although they probably found their inspiration a little closer to home).

There’s also actress Michelle Monaghan, whose little Willow was born in 2008.

Listen: Can you shotgun a baby name?

But it’s not just the tree that’s made Willow so hot right now. It’s a witch.

Willow used to be a very rare name for girls, compared to some of the other nature names out there, like Lily and Holly. Then, in 1997, along came the Joss Whedon series Buffy The Vampire Slayer, with the wonderful Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg. How could you not love Willow, even when she turned completely evil in season six?

The year after Buffy’s debut, Willow entered the top 1000 in the US. But the name didn’t really take off for another decade or so. That’s because all the teenage Buffy fans needed time to get old enough to have babies and finally use that name they’d been holding onto.

Clearly, Buffy fans are very loyal.

“If there’s a Whedon success story when it comes to names, Willow would be the star,” a Nameberry blog declared.

Of course, Willow isn’t the only name to get a boost in popularity from Buffy. Anya and Xander have done pretty well out of Buffy too. Buffy? Not so much.

So are Sam and Snez Buffy fans? Nature lovers? Do they secretly love dancing around the house to Willow Smith’s 2010 hit 'Whip My Hair'? Or is there some other reason they named their daughter Willow Wendy Wood?

No doubt we’ll hear about it.
