When you think of a romantic holiday or your typical honeymoon destination, places like Paris, Venice, or a resort in Fiji or Bali probably come to mind.

Not that there’s anything wrong with those places per se, but what about the roads, and cities, less travelled? You’ll still get the sprawling views, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and envy-inducing Instagram shots, without having to compete with too many tourists.

Instead, let Flight Centre expand your horizons. Their Round the World experts can help you plan and organise a truly memorably holiday for you and your number one, with recommendations and exceptional service throughout. They’ll also always offer you at least two options for airfare, accommodation and holiday packages, all done within 24 hours of your initial enquiry.

Now, you just need to decide where to go. If you’re in need of a little inspiration, consider these 13 destinations that shout ‘romance’ from the rooftops to the treetops.

1. Lisbon, Portugal.

Sure, you know about the cobblestone streets of Paris and the bridges of Florence, but Lisbon, Portugal is often Europe’s forgotten romantic paradise. Start the day with a delicious Portuguese tart and espresso, take a rustic yellow tram around the city, enjoy a late summer dinner to the plaintive tunes of traditional Fado music in the historic Bairro Alto district, or take a sunset stroll along the Port of Lisbon and bask in the sweeping harbour views where the Atlantic meets the River Tagus.

Whether you're cruising on a fiord at Mildford Sound or having an overnight stay at Larnach Castle, you'll want to come back again and again.

3. Seville, Spain

By all means, do Barcelona and Madrid, but don't forget Seville. The capital of southern Spain’s Andalusia region, Seville is a melting pot of Gothic and Arabian influences. It's a city for lovers where simply walking down the street is a pleasure.

Take in the city's many cathedrals and stunning architecture during the day but make sure you save your energy for a spot of flamenco dancing. Or you can re-energise with free tapas that come with your cocktail in the city's many bars. Delish.

5. Marseille, France

If you're spending time in France, add on a relaxed trip to Marseille. In the South of France, Marseille combines the charms of both the Côte d’Azur and the Mediterranean, while still being relatively untouched. Spend the day swimming in the many inlet beaches at the Calanques before experiencing the bohemian side of the city in the suburb Le Panier filled with quirky bars and eateries.

The city is also passionate about pizza and fresh produce, so make sure you make a platter complete with fresh fruits and cheeses for you and your special someone.

Marseille is also just a small bus-ride away from the lavender fields and intimate streets of Aix-en-Provence, which was loved by Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cézanne.

6. Krabi, Thailand

While flocks of tourists head to Bangkok, Phuket and Koh Samui, take the road less travelled for a wonderful rendezvous in Krabi in Thailand's South. After all, what could be more magical than a leisurely boat ride along the Andaman Sea with nothing but you, turquoise water and the limestone cliffs?

While the province is known for the charming Phi Phi Islands (including Maya Bay, the busy beach where The Beach was filmed), there are actually dozens of small islands which are just as beautiful and less crowded. You'll have more room to do your thing too, whether that's a cosy picnic for two, a spot of kayaking or an adventure day trip.

The flight is just over an hour from Bangkok, so it's easy to get to your beach break after a bustling city jaunt.

Visit the tiny, quaint fishing village of Conca dei Marini where you can swim in the emerald waters of the Grotta dello Smeraldo or stay at a convent-turned-luxury hotel in Monastero Santa Rosa.

To up the ante, time your trip so you can clink a glass of champagne at sunset, or better yet, do it from the skies in a hot air balloon ride.
