Thanks to Rihanna, this lipstick shade has gone viral.

It’s a colour many people associate with bad makeup from the ’80s and wouldn’t dream of wearing out, unless it was to a costume party. A colour that’s often unflattering and hard to pull off.

Yes, we’re talking about purple.

But there’s one woman who has proven this rich and rare shade is nothing to be scared of. That it’s possible to wear and look undeniably “now”. That brave woman is Rihanna.

It started off as a simple selfie on Instagram – a gorgeous looking snap of the singer sporting a bold lilac lip (top picture).

Then the pictures featuring her purple lips kept coming. One after the other (during Coachella, of course) until we were faced with not two, or three but 10 pictures of Rihanna’s purple lips love affair.

“Where is it from!?” the people yelled (or rather commented). “Why do I not have a purple lipstick in my life?” we lamented.

Finally, we have an answer.

The colour in question is ‘Purple Haze’, from Rihanna’s pal’s makeup range Free Spirit Cosmetics, which retails for about $32.

Of course, as soon as Rihanna revealed the details of the lip stain, it sold out completely. (Post continues after gallery.)

The good news is that it’s highly likely it will be restocked and it appears that there is international shipping available.

The even better news is that us mere mortals can pull of the purple too.

The trick is to keep your lips the focal point by keeping the rest of your makeup simple, and choosing a purple shade that best suits your skin tone.

So look for lavender, lust over lilac and go mad for mauve - it's time for purple reign (sorry, we couldn't help ourselves).
