Reminders Of Him, best-selling author Colleen Hoover's third novel to be adapted for the big screen, had some high expectations to meet.

The book of the same name, on which the film is based, has sold more than six million copies, with book fans having a very specific idea of how they want their favourite characters to be depicted on screen.

The newly released movie sticks closely to the book and follows the classic Hoover formula of pairing an intense love story with a dramatic event that causes life-changing ripples across the worlds of these characters.

The movie begins with Kenna Rowan (Maika Monroe) returning to her small hometown after five years in prison. Kenna has been released on good behaviour but with no money to her name, or family or friends to help her get back on her feet she desperately searches for a job and a place to call home. Her motivation for getting her life together is hooked on her desperate need to meet her young daughter, Diem (Zoe Kosovic) for the first time, who is being raised by her grandparents after her mother gave birth to her in prison and never got the chance to hold her.

The parents of Kenna's deceased boyfriend Scotty (Rudy Pankow) Grace (Lauren Graham) and Patrick (Bradley Whitford) refuse to let her near her daughter as they blame her for their son's death.

While looking for a job, Kenna meets Ledger Ward (Tyriq Withers) a former NFL player and local bar owner who also happens to be Scotty's childhood best friend. While initially wary of Kenna, he eventually takes pity on her and offers her some work at his bar, and the two slowly begin to develop very strong but complicated feelings for each other.

Speaking to Mamamia, Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers said they were very aware of the book's fandom when they were announced as the actors playing Kenna and Ledger, and now hope that readers will appreciate the way they've adapted the characters for the big screen.

"I didn't try to make Ledger Ward into everything everybody imagined, you just can't do that," Withers said. "But there are close to 7 million copies of this book sold so there are a lot of different perspectives of what Ledger should be like. The basis of it is that I just had to bring myself to the character and live within that."

The sizzling love story between Kenna and Ledger is the central story thread in Reminders Of Him, so finding actors who had undeniable romantic chemistry on screen was key to the movie's success.

Monroe said that from the moment she first read with Withers, she was instantly certain that he was the only person who could play Ledger.

"I remember when we did his chemistry read, we did the scene in the bar where our characters meet for the first time," Monroe said.

"I don't know where he was for the audition, maybe in his home or something, but he was pretending to make drinks and shaking things. And I just thought, 'Oh, my God, I'm obsessed, this is incredible for me'. It just felt immediate.

"As soon as they told Tyriq he got the role, I reached out and said 'Want to hang out?'. From then on, we've become besties, and we've spent a lot of time together outside of work, which was really key to getting to know each other and to feel comfortable while filming.

"I just always felt like he had my back through all of this, you know," she continued. "And that's when you can open up, and you can be your most vulnerable. If you know that someone's got you all, that's really lovely."

"I think it's such an intimate moment to be making something with Maika at such a specific time in our lives," Withers added. "And you know, film is forever, and these memories are forever."

Along with an intense love story that romantics will love seeing play out on screen, Reminders Of Him is also a story that deals with grief, loss, anger and forgiveness. All themes that Monroe knows will cause some moviegoers to shed a tear while watching this story unfold, but she also hopes it will resonate with people who have been through this type of life-shattering loss.

"All you can hope for is that people connect to these characters," Monroe said. "I think there are some really beautiful messages in this movie. I think it's about forgiving others, but also learning to forgive yourself, which may be the much harder thing to do at times. I hope people leave this movie with some hope and knowing the importance of love."

Reminders Of Him is in cinemas now, it is rated M.
