Let's be real: marriage is hard. Long-term relationships eventually reach a point where the little things start to grate on your last nerve. Maybe it's the way they chew. Maybe it's the way she talks. Maybe it's him being a total financial disaster who insists on sourcing expensive peppercorns from a completely different state while you're drowning in debt. 

But while most couples just complain to a therapist or passive-aggressively leave the dishes in the sink, the couple in Over Your Dead Body takes "till death do us part" to a whole other level.

This action-comedy-thriller stars Jason Segel as Dan, a washed-up, one-hit-wonder director currently relegated to film-making purgatory: directing pop-up ads.

His wife, Lisa, played by the always-brilliant Samara Weaving, is an aspiring actress who is deeply resentful of Dan for burning through all their money. 

They absolutely, unequivocally hate each other. Their arguments are all petty, marital warfare, complete with Dan mocking Lisa's Australian accent and Lisa weaponising his failures.

To reconnect, they head off to a remote cabin for a weekend getaway. But there's a twist: both of them have the same idea. They've each independently planned to murder the other for a sweet, sweet insurance payout. 

But just as the domestic homicide is about to commence, things go entirely off the rails. A group of dangerous, uninvited strangers crash the weekend with an entirely different agenda, plunging the cabin into absolute, blood-soaked chaos.

While this movie got a cinematic release in the US earlier in the year, it completely skipped Australian cinemas. Luckily, Prime Video has finally dropped it locally, and it is a certified, 100% recommended must-watch. As a remake of the brilliant Norwegian film The Trip, this movie strikes the perfect balance between dark humour and genuine stakes.

Jason Segel plays the pathetic-yet-dangerous husband to perfection, and the chemistry between the two leads is electric as it's fuelled entirely by, well… spite.

Samara Weaving is the undisputed queen of this genre. A modern day scream queen, if you will. If you loved her in Ready or Not, you know exactly how well she handles the gory-horror-dark-comedy sweet spot, and she is utterly hilarious here. 

I will say, for the fellow scaredy-cats out there, be prepared. There is a hefty chunk of the movie that gets really gnarly and intensely shocking. It definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone, so brace yourselves for some heavy gore.

The film kicks into overdrive thanks to an incredible supporting cast, most notably Juliette Lewis and Timothy Olyphant. Olyphant, in particular, steals every single scene he's in. He manages to toe the line between relatable, everyday comedy and absolutely terrifying, unhinged psychopathy. One minute you're laughing at his dialogue, and the next you are genuinely afraid of what he's going to do next.

But what I love most about this movie is that, despite the absurdity of it all, it's actually deeply relatable. I am a sucker for stories that take everyday relationship anxieties and turn them into full-blown horror movies.

Think Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, one of the scariest, and most compelling shows I've seen this year. The writer took the concept of wedding-day cold feet, something many people have experienced, and turned it into a terrifying horror movie.

Over Your Dead Body does the same. It takes the mild, simmering resentment of a long-term marriage and cranks it up to eleven. When Lisa and Dan say they want to kill each other, they mean it. 

 It's hilarious, it's intense and it's deeply messed up. Go watch it immediately.
