I was the world's biggest Masterchef fan. My family would count down the days to Masterchef season with dizzy excitement.
For my son it meant he could stay up a little later during those really long challenges (short of committing to taste one of the non dessert dishes there is nothing he won't do to stay up a little longer). For my husband who loves food almost as much as he loves TV Masterchef is his nirvana. And for me to find something that appeals to both boys and vaguely interests me is nothing short of a miracle
So every night we bunkered down to watch Australia's top amateur chefs like we had every season before.
It didn't take me long to warm to Amina or Audra. Or even Kylie, Ben, Andy and Bo. But there were a lot of prickly feelings as well and I can't help feeling the producers tried to play a little Big Brother in the way they put the people together. Julia's stoicism and headstrong determination is worth a post on its own and Deborah? I'm not sure they didn't try and create some drama by putting in a woman who was clearly in a different age bracket from every other contestant on the show.
And then there was the whole "whole animal" issue. Whether it was fishing for your own salmon, roasting an entire pig or meeting a bull in tbe pantry (what on earth was that about?), the whole concept of hunter gathering did not appeal to me. And it's not just because I am a vegetarian. Nobody liked seeing the bull. Surely!
The rushed ending, the tour of the Italy and in particular the Barilla factory where we never got to see the actual factory and the tired format didn’t grip me this year
That said last night I tuned in along with 2.2 million other Australians and watched Andy's mother, er I mean Andy take out the title.
I cried when I saw Julia's sister, I glowed with pride for Andy's mother and I commiserated with Audra and her family.
But to be honest I do not know if next year I will be counting down the days to Masterchef. I think (and I say this now that it’s over) I am finally over Masterchef.
Did you watch last night? What did you think of the winner and will you be committing to anther season of Masterchef?
