Finally an answer: whether the most awkward New Year's Eve video was fake or not.

By now you’ve probably seen the video dubbed as the most awkward New Year’s Eve countdown ever.

As the final moments of 2016 approached, the hosts of Channel Eleven music program The Loop bring a group of ‘competition winners’ on stage with them to countdown the new year.

These people did not look happy to be there and the best way to describe the whole thing would be awkward.

Yesterday, Mamamia writer Clare Stephen’s theorised that the video was perhaps a fake.

Now, it’s been confirmed.

Speaking on Studio 10 breakfast show this morning, one of the show's hosts, Scott Tweedie, revealed that the whole segment was staged.

"We decided instead of doing the greatest countdown ever, how can we make this as awkward as possible?" the presenter said.

"We love awkward."

Tweedie said that while many people were confused, people who watch the show regularly would have known it was a fake.

"We thought there would be a few tweets on Facebook posts, but then Huffington Post, New York Post, the Pakistan Telegraph, they are talking about this story."

"Ladies and gentlemen, we got you."
