Police have confirmed Dr Patrick Pritzwald-Stegmann has died overnight following an alleged assault at a Box Hill hospital last month.

The 41-year-old heart surgeon died of his injuries after being allegedly struck to the head in a one-punch attack while waiting outside the hospital he worked at.

The father-of-two had spent the last four weeks in a critical condition in The Alfred Hospital after the incident.

The man’s lawyer told the court her client was suffering from a number of ‘psychiatric illnesses’, for which he had been prescribed medication, as well as drug withdrawal symptoms.

The investigation remains with Whitehorse Crime Investigation Unit under the oversight of the Homicide Squad.

Investigators will now await the results of a post mortem before reviewing charges.

Terribly sad to hear that Dr Patrick Pritzwald-Stegmann has passed away after being attacked at Box Hill hospital. Such a senseless loss

Dr Pritzwald-Stegmann leaves behind a wife and two young children.

Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.
