Manus Island detention centre to be shut, Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says.

By political reporter Stephanie Anderson

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O’Neill says the Manus Island regional processing centre will be closed following a ruling from the country’s Supreme Court.

PNG’s Supreme Court yesterday ruled Australia’s detention of asylum seekers on Manus Island is illegal.

In a statement, Mr O’Neill said that his government “will immediately ask the Australian Government to make alternative arrangements for the asylum seekers”.

More to come.
