At first, Grayson and Julia appeared to be Married at First Sight's most promising match.

Between their spectacular Sydney Opera House wedding and their easy rapport at the reception, this 34-year-old company director and 35-year-old confidence and charisma consultant looked set to be on MAFS for the long haul.

Then, as quickly as these two found a spark at their wedding, it was extinguished on their honeymoon. On this week's episode, Julia declared she's ready to 'consciously uncouple' from Grayson. Ouch.

In a chat with Mamamia, Grayson admitted he doesn't understand why they were matched in the first place.

"I absolutely don't know. I honestly could not tell you. I've been racking my brain since the day I left the experiment," he said. "What is it that these experts saw in Julia that they thought we were compatible? We don't have any common interests."

Oop. Alrighty!

Grayson reckons that Julia never got to know him before she decided to pull the plug on their relationship.

"She said to me two days into the honeymoon that she was not sure if she wanted to be there. She made it clear in her vows that her dating history is very checklist-oriented…. I feel like those boxes weren't ticked [with me]."

Grayson also has a theory that perhaps Julia, who identifies as bisexual, wanted to be matched with a bride — rather than a groom.

"I do think she wanted to actually be matched with a woman. Throughout the experiment, I was unsure, but watching it back now, it's become evident to me."

To be clear, Julia never explicitly stated she had a preference — you can read our chat with Julia here — but it was just something Grayson had suspected.

"Julia mentioned that I was not emotional enough. She said our interests are so different… she's very immersed in the gay community… she mentioned so many times how she just can't see how I'm going to fit into this," he said. "It was just so deflating. Jeez, what's wrong with me?"

In conversation with Mamamia, Grayson said Julia had returned to the series reunion already in a new relationship — with a woman she met prior to filming.

"At the reunion, Julia walked in and almost instantly told me she was seeing someone," he said. "The nail in the coffin for me was the fact that she told me that she'd met the person just prior to going in [to the experiment]. I guess a month after, we went back to the reunion and magically, she's in a relationship with this woman. For me, that was really hurtful and I didn't react to it."

"I think in that moment, I felt like I was still protecting Julia from all the other nonsense that was going on, and I just didn't speak up. When I digested it, I was like, wow, if the shoe was on the other foot, and I was in a relationship with someone that I'd just met before going into the experiment, I think there'd be some pretty serious questions being asked."

Later in the chat, though, he added: "I'm happy for her that she's in a relationship and it's all going well, because ultimately, that's what I want too. I want to celebrate that for her."

When looking back at their relationship on and off screen, Grayson said the way Julia would speak to him got him offside.

"Julia tried to outsmart me rather than get to know me," he said. "The questions that I was asked a lot of the time weren't to build a connection. It was probably to solidify or justify how she felt about me."

"If I needed a therapist, I would have gone and saw one."

When asked why so little of their relationship was shown in the MAFS episodes, Grayson claims Julia wasn't always around.

"The reason why we don't see much of our relationship is because Julia wasn't present. She didn't immerse herself in the challenges, she found reasons not to do it — it's always an excuse. She just wasn't there physically or emotionally."

Grayson says this took a massive toll on him. "It's really hard to sit back and watch [the show]. I can see the loneliness in my energy and in my eyes."

The groom became sombre as he admitted he felt 'robbed' of his MAFS experience. "I feel like I was absolutely robbed… I put it all on hold just for this shot at love. Julia didn't even want to get to know me on a friendship basis. There was just no interest in me whatsoever — it's hard to digest."

But there was one bride Grayson reckons was a better match.

"In regard to compatibility, I really liked Alissa's energy. She has got this attitude of like, 'I don't give a f*ck, but I back myself.' She's ambitious, she's not afraid to speak up and back up her beliefs, she's quite fierce but also soft, and she knows what she wants. The thing I got with Julia is, I just don't think Julia knows what she wants."

When asked for his honest thoughts on the controversial intruder, Tyson, Grayson did not hold back.

"I don't like Tyson. He is a guy who gives men a bad name. For me, as a man, I believe it's my job to help build up women, help them achieve their goals and support them — he is tearing women down. It's disgusting behaviour."

Grayson went on to say that Tyson was the one groom he couldn't get along with.

"I mean, what's there to like about Tyson? He's not intelligent, he's a misogynistic pig." Can I get an amen?

Grayson doesn't have any regrets about his time on MAFS. These days, he is not 'actively dating' but he's still open to finding love.

"All I want to do is meet someone and fall in love… hopefully, it opens doors to meeting someone in the future," he said. "I'm just getting my feet back on the ground and floating back into the real world."

But he maintains that he is 'friendly' with his ex-bride, Julia.

"There's no bad blood there," he said.

"We're just so completely different people. We're civil, I wish her all the best."
