I took this photo of the stockpile of drugs on our kitchen counter about a week ago. Coco and Remy were sick with coughs and teething and colds. Everyone else was stocking up on vitamins to boost our immune systems in a desperate attempt to protect ourselves from the vast amounts of germs we were breathing in as the little ones…..
….coughed and spluttered all over us. Good times…..And so many trips to the chemist.
Kids get sick. A lot. They don't tell you that in the brochure. And since Coco has started kindy this year, I know we're in for a year of ugh as her little immune system learns to cope with the cocktail of germs whipped up any time you have more than one child in a confined space. The first year your kid starts daycare or kindy or school and begins to spend stretches of time with other kids? Prepare to spend many many hours at the doctor. Make friends with your pharmacist. And take a bank loan for all the doctors bills and medication you will have to buy. None of that is in the brochure either.
(As an aside, I'd like to take a moment to say HURRY UP and make the ABC children's channel because when your kid is sick, lying in bed or on the couch and watching TV is pretty much your only form of peace. We're fortunate enough to have Foxtel so Nick Jr and Playhouse Disney are doing some serious time on my TV. But ABC would be nice.)
Things can get pretty stressful and frustrating when your kids are home and sick. Single parents? You are amazing. I bow down in awe. It's hard enough with two parents on the case.
I do believe Jason and I reached a new high – or low – in our married life last week. Up to our necks in grumpy, snotty children and fighting off colds and coughs ourselves, Jason ducked out to take the dog to the vet to have his teeth cleaned under general anaesthetic so his breath wouldn't make the children cry anymore (FYI, that was not in the brochure about the dog OKAY???).
I was jealous that he got to escape the house. That's how sad my life had become at that moment. I really REALLY wanted to be the one to take the dog to get his TEETH CLEANED. THAT WOULD BE A TREAT FOR ME RIGHT NOW.
Because it had been, oh, 8 hours since we'd last been to the chemist, naturally, we had run out of yet something else. So I texted Jason: "Panadol suppositories". As I hit send, I thought to myself, this is the married version of sexting.
