It’s been a huge week on the red carpet with the MTV Video Music Awards and the Emmys, but there was one outfit flashback we didn’t see coming.

Rather than going pantless a la Taylor Swift or pulling on a sleek, glittery silver frock a la Iggy Azalea or J-Lo, Katy Perry looked to Britney Spears for inspiration.

The 29-year-old turned up to the MTV Video Music Awards in a denim dress, her new love interest Riff Raff (real name Horst Christian Simco) was dressed in a matching Canadian tuxedo. Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s double denim moment at the 2001 American Music Awards has been etched into our fashion consciousness forever, and not in a good way. We thought there was no way we’d ever see this outfit on the red carpet again.

It had us questioning everything we ever thought was right in this world.
