After starting her YouTube channel just over a month ago, the 21-year-old has already racked up thousands of views for her tutorials, showcasing looks from the classic red lip to a purple, glittery smokey eye.
She’s also a quad amputee.
According to reports, Californian-based Dobrow was 18 years old when she woke up one morning with flu-like symptoms. By the afternoon she’d worsened and was taken to hospital, where she was diagnosed with Meningocococcemia — a bacterial infection that leads to meningitis.
It’s not known how she caught the infection, but it’s usually spread through saliva.
The formerly active teenager, who spent her days working, dancing and boxing was then forced to spend four months in ICU, undergoing more than 20 surgeries and severe skin trauma. Both arms and legs also had to be amputated.
After years of rehab, Dobrow now has prosthetic legs, a leopard print-emblazoned prosthetic right arm and is currently practising and learning to use one for her left side.
She films and applies her makeup herself, using one hand and her mouth to expertly apply eyeshadow, mascara, brow products and lipstick.
As for her winged eyeliner skills, they’re prbably some of the best we’ve ever seen.
Applying her face to music, Dobrow isn’t afraid to pull funny faces, freestyle dance – basically how any of us are when we’re applying makeup alone in front of a mirror – and include bloopers in her tutorials.
She’s quickly building a loyal fan base.
“You’re so amazing! most people wouldn’t have the determination you do :) Be super proud with yourself! You’re beautiful, don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise,” reads one comment on YouTube.
Another viewer added, “Kaitlyn you are brilliant at putting your makeup on. You should do more videos we love them. teaching us all how to do it properly xxx”
While she receives many similar comments on her Facebook page from family, friends and strangers alike telling her how brave and incredible she is, Dobrow doesn’t put herself up as an ‘inspiration’, nor does she focus on her situation, one that would challenge many.
Instead she’s just a young woman sharing her love of makeup on the internet, like millions of others. And we’re loving her work.
