Now this is not easy to admit, but two long weekends have put some serious strain on my sanity and here’s why.
Our’s is a traditional house: My husband works, I’m at home. For now, at least. I always wanted to give my kids as much time as I could while they were little, and we’re lucky enough that I don’t have to work for a while, so that’s what we’re doing, and it works.
I’ve surprised myself how much I enjoy being at home and ‘running the house’. I was always into my job before, and before I had my kids I was worried that I’d be bored, and lonely. But I’m not. I’m busy, organised, have a whole group of new friends through playgroup and to be honest, I’ve never been happier. But…
I’ve become so good at keeping the house organised and keeping track of all my kids’ daily activities and appointments that I really hate it when my husband’s around, throwing a spanner in the works.
Over Easter, I nearly killed him. He kept suggesting (to the kids, of course), that we go out and do activities at exactly the wrong time (like meal-times, and my littlest’s nap time) and they’d get all excited and the whole day would be out of whack. They’re all excited at bedtime, or they won’t eat their dinner. Or he’d get all worked up about some great craft activity or game in the back garden that would make an unholy mess of my house.
I would be so stressed I’d snap and we’d have a fight and even the kids began to notice how irritated I was.
I love him, of course I do, but I like it when he’s not there enough to get in the way of my and the kids’ nice, organised life.
Now he’s telling me that he’s got so much unused leave saved up he’s thinking of taking a whole month off to spend some ‘quality time’ with the kids. Oh my God, I think we’d get divorced.
Am I being a nightmare wife? How do I get over this?
