Even now, when Sophie* looks back to the beginning of her marriage, she struggles to see any red flags.
The couple met in a nightclub, drawn to each other in a way that, at the time, felt rare and intoxicating. It began as a physical connection and quickly softened into something deeper.
"It was a very intense physical connection," Sophie said. "And that turned into romantic love."
After they got married, Sophie believed their relationship only became stronger. They laughed easily and enjoyed each other's company. It felt passionate, no matter how much time passed.

"He is not who I thought he was."
"If you'd asked me before all this happened, I would've described our marriage as fun, loving, exciting," she said.
From Sophie's perspective, everything was perfect. Then one day, her daughter handed her his phone. Unsettled by a feeling she couldn't quite describe, Sophie's daughter had decided to go through her father's messages.
What she found were explicit sexual exchanges — with men. When she confronted her husband, he denied any wrongdoing.
"He told me he'd been having massages from old men," she said. "Which was playing it down."
The messages clearly told a different story. This wasn't a one-off lapse — and it wasn't just massages — but a pattern of behaviour involving frequent visits to male sex workers.
"That moment hit me like a ton of bricks," she said. "I remember thinking something is seriously wrong here. He is not who I thought he was."
What shook her most wasn't just that he had been unfaithful, it was the realisation that there he had been living a completely separate life — and she'd had no idea.
"He said he had 'two heads'," she said. "Like he was living a double life."
"He tried to say it was my fault because of something I'd said," she explained. "But I could see that it was gaslighting. I wasn't going to accept that."
In the weeks that followed, Sophie found herself replaying their entire relationship in her mind.
"For months, I questioned whether the marriage had been real at all," she said. "I thought it was completely fake."
While she now acknowledges that there were some genuine moments of love and connection, this sits alongside the knowledge that another version of her husband existed simultaneously.
"Another side to him."
"I can see there was real love," she said. "But there was also another side to him."
Aside from the emotional fallout, the betrayal carried practical consequences too. Believing she was in a monogamous marriage, Sophie had never questioned her physical safety.
"That was my biggest fear straight away, that I might have an STI," Sophie recalled.
The realisation that something as fundamental as sexual health had been placed at risk without her knowledge was devastating.
"It's very sad when you believe you're in a safe, monogamous relationship, and you realise you weren't," she said.
In the immediate aftermath of the discovery, Sophie didn't tell anyone.
"I needed time to process it," she said. "Once other people know your marriage is over, it becomes real. I wasn't ready for that."
But before she had the chance to confide in family or friends, she discovered something else.
When reading through the messages again, Sophie noticed her husband often referred to a "mate". After further investigation, she discovered that mate was actually her boss's husband. They'd been having an affair.
This was a man who had been in her home, who she had considered a friend.
"It felt manipulative when I thought about it later," she said. "Like I was being included in something I didn't even know existed."
When she confronted her husband about the relationship, he didn't deny it. Instead, he asked whether she intended to tell the man's wife, Sophie's boss.
A layered betrayal.
"It wasn't just sexual betrayal," Sophie said. "It was social, professional, personal. It was layered."
Ultimately, Sophie lost more than a marriage. She lost trust in shared friendships, and the stability of believing her world was what she thought it was. Although her husband spent months attempting to persuade her to stay, Sophie says she never seriously considered reconciliation.
"The deceit changed the way I saw him," she explained. "I couldn't trust him anymore."
"I felt emotionally detached almost straight away," she said. "There was nothing left for me to rebuild on."

In the aftermath, Sophie asked herself why she didn't see the signs earlier. How could she not know her husband was not only unfaithful but also had a sexual attraction she had no idea about. She now realises the betrayal wasn't about her, it was about him.
"I was loving, and I trusted my husband," she said. "That's not a weakness."
