How young is too young for a vibrator?

Are we ready to talk about sex? We so rarely do here and I’m not sure why not. Perhaps because I talked and wrote about it for 15 years straight when I was at magazines. And overdosed on sealed-sections.

Anyway.

Oprah did a show last week about how to talk to your kids about sex. It included segments regarding kids of all ages. Her guest and expert was Dr Laura Berman, a well-known and widely respected sex therapist and educator. She once came and spoke to all the international Cosmo editors at one of our conferences and she was very impressive.
What caused controversy on the Oprah show this time was the discussion about masturbation and Dr Berman’s suggestion that girls in their late teens be given vibrators to help them learn about their bodies and how to get the most out of them. You can imagine what happened next.
Folks went BALLISTIC. If you cup your hand around your ear to make a funnel? You can hear them STILL going ballistic over the other side of the world. You can go here if you want to read some of the comments on Oprah’s site. I’m sure you can guess the gist….

In an earlier appearance, Dr Berman also talked about the 7 different types of vibrators, including the Aphrodite which she designed (ka-ching!). You can see that video here. (don’t worry, it’s Oprah, it’s not smutty). This might go some of the way to explaining Dr Berman’s enthusiasm for everyone having vibrators.

Here is a video of Dr Berman helping a mum explain sex to her 10 year old daughter.

And here, you can see Dr Berman talking to teenage girls about sex. Also, fascinating. A comprehensive explanation of the ‘bases’.

So that should keep you busy until at least tomorrow…..
