Guy Sebastian's struggle for truth

Guy Sebastian has said that his Christian outlook has become less black and white as he has grown older.

The 30 year old singer told the Herald Sun: “My views are more based on discovery and research than just what I’m told.”

While Sebastian is still a Christian with a strong belief in God, he says that he is now less likely to take a hardline stance on complex issues like same-sex marriage.

When Sebastian won Australian Idol in 2003 he was the poster boy for clean cut Christianity, but the Battle Scars singer says that: “Because what I was told in regards to so many things was so wrong, I’ve gone from a place where I was told there was one way and only one way to being more in a place where I don’t think anyone has the right to say what they believe is more important or more significant.”

Born in Malaysia, Sebastian was raised in Adelaide where he attended Paradise Community Church, a member of the Assemblies of God Pentecostal Church. He performed on Paradise Church’s Christmas albums until 2005. Sebastian also wrote the theme song for the Roman Catholic Church’s World Youth Day, performing for Pope Benedict XVI when the event was held in Sydney in 2008.

However, his recent comments better reflect his latest album, Armageddon.  The new album features a song called Get Along in which Sebastian highlights the ignorance and fear than can exist between religious groups.
