WHAT IS IT? The ‘Cruel Summer Swing Dress’ from cult Aussie brand Gorman. The name is a little misleading, though — this bright design is way too fun to ever be considered cruel.
WHY DO I NEED IT? Because if you can’t wear bright colours and fun patterns in summer, when can you? You’ll stand out in the sea of monochrome. The dress itself is a simple cut that’s not too clingy, and is made of cotton voile so you won’t overheat.
WHERE CAN I WEAR IT? Anywhere, really! It’ll be your best mate for those balmy evening barbecues and picnics, weekend brunches, cocktails with friends, dinner with the in-laws… you name it.
WHAT WOULD I WEAR IT WITH? If you love your brights, a vivid pair of clogs, sandals or heels and an equally vivid handbag would be perfection. But you can just as easily keep things simple with more subdued accessories, as the Gorman model pictured above has done.
IT LOOKS GREAT ON THE MODEL BUT WHAT ABOUT ON A REGULAR WOMAN? Um, hello — it’ll look gorgeous on any body shape. (And if you happen to be pregnant you’re in luck, as the loose fit of the dress will easily accommodate a growing bump.)
WILL IT DATE? The print is a rather out-there one, but the classic cut of the dress gives it longevity, so it won’t date as fast as you might think.
HOW MUCH IS IT? $199.
WHERE CAN I BUY IT FROM? Gorman, either in-store or online right here. It's available from size 6 to size 14.
