Following the loss of many iconic entertainers this year, Demetrios Hrysikos wants to act as a protector for the iconic US star in the hope that 2016 will spare her.
“Help 2016 catch these hands if it goes anywhere near Betty White!” Hrysikos has written in the description of his ‘Help protect Betty White from 2016’ crowdfunding page. “If she’s okay with it I will fly to where ever Betty White is and keep her safe till Jan 1 , 2017.”
“Now, assuming she doesn’t want a strange Greek standing guard outside her door all monies will be donated to the Spartanburg little theatre to help craft new stars of stage and screen to carry mantle of the legends that have left is this year.”
Hrysikos’ initial goal was to raise US$2000 (AU$2780), but that target has well and truly been surpassed. The total amount raised was this morning sitting at US$5160.
White is yet to comment on if she will be taking Hrysikos up on his offer.
Commenters on Hrysikos’ GoFundMe page are generally very supportive.
"I think Betty White would love the idea of you donating the mint to a theatre group!" wrote Elizabeth.
"I love Betty and I love the theater so either way I am good with this!!" agreed Shawna. "2016 you can suck it!!"
However some commenters questioned Hrysikos' intentions.
"Maybe a better charity would be one of Betty White's and not your own," wrote Don.
"This should not be allowed," wrote Sharon. "This site is to raise money for people in need."
"She has more money than any of you."
Many people where quick to come to Hrysikos' defence
"No scam here, folks," wrote Tracy Huskey Eggleton who also wrote that she knows Hrysikos personally. "Just a nice guy trying to have a little fun and do something good for his community."
