A day in the life of a Disney On Ice star.

You know who would lead a busy life?

Elsa. All that snow-storming and queen-waving and twirling-on-a-mountain-top must be exhausting.

Just ask Sophia Adams, the lucky Disney On Ice presents Magical Ice Festival star who gets to live out every little girl’s dream, spinning across the ice in a sparkly turquoise dress.

A lot of us have had the magical opportunity to see a Disney On Ice show in our lifetimes (and if you haven’t, what are you even doing? Get yourself to the nearest show. NOW!), but have you ever stopped to wonder what it’s like for the people in the skates?

Californian-born Sophia has been playing the high-pressure role of Elsa for two years now, touring the world with the show Disney On Ice presents Magical Ice Festival . When I spoke with her earlier this week over email, she said, “I felt honoured to be cast as Elsa. I worked hard on AND off the ice to learn personality traits… and how to skate “Let It Go!”

So what exactly does a day in the life of an ice princess look like? Building ice castles from scratch? Running from untrusting villagers? Not quite.

"Depending on how many shows we have a day, I do what any normal person does before work: eat breakfast, read a book or watch TV then go to the venue to warm up. Sometimes we'll have three shows a day on the weekend or even during the week, and multiple days in a row, but really, every performance feels like second nature so it isn't too mentally or physically trying."

Not too physically trying? Surely it's hard to find the energy to be the Queen of Ice every single day?! "I will say, Elsa does require a lot of strength and power, but I've gotten used to it, and I love it. I think of her as my daily exercise so I can skip the gym."

The Elsa Ice Queen Workout. It'll be the next big thing.

But the PRESSURE. What about the pressure, Sophia? Surely, the venues are filled with little kids in costumes, just holding their breath until Elsa comes gliding in? How does a person prepare for that pressure every day?

"After performing as Elsa for almost two years now, I just go out in the show, and there she is. I don't do any extra prep other than making sure she has enough sparkle before she comes out."

Sparkle. There's no Elsa without sparkle. And the Disney On Ice presents Magical Ice Festival tour, which will be seen this year for the first time by Australian audiences, certainly brings the sparkle. Not to mention the lights, fireworks, glow-sticks, singing, aerial stunts, and quadruple axel skating jumps. Sigh.

The cast themselves know how lucky they are to be there. "The travel is the best part of my job", says Sophia. "I am seeing countries I never even imagined visiting."

"The cast on my show is really one big family. We eat together, stretch together, and share the latest makeup trends. It's really relaxed backstage. We like to play games sometimes, and my ultimate favourite, prank each other!"

But most of all, it's about the kids. For the skaters, the wide-eyed awe from the tiny people in the audience is the best reward of all. "I love making eye contact with them and especially the cutest ones dressed as Elsa."

"One of my favourite memories happened in Utrecht, Netherlands. I was waiting to go out for the blizzard scene as Elsa, and I normally walk fast to the ice almost through the audience. Usually my crew will make sure no one is in my way, but they missed a little girl dressed as Elsa running toward me with arms out as if she was ready to embrace me."

"As I braced myself, she ran right past me and didn't notice I was there!"… Ouch. Adorable ouch.

"I love the kids. They really make every show worth doing."

Sounds like tough work. Sophia, best of luck for the Australian leg of the Disney On Ice presents Magical Ice Festival.

We're not jealous at all.
