Candy Cane Lane is the new Christmas movie you’ll want to gather your loved ones together to watch during the festive season.

The new Prime Video movie stars comedy powerhouse Eddie Murphy, in his first holiday film, as Chris Carver, a husband and father who receives some brutal career news in the lead-up to Christmas Day.

To complicate family dynamics more, his wife Carol Carver (played by Tracee Ellis Ross) is given a promotion on the same day as Chris is reckoning with his career downslide, leaving him feeling like he won’t be able to help provide for the couple’s three children.

But in classic Christmas movie style, there's a way for Chris to help out his family and not spoil the holiday season, and it includes winning a neighbourhood Christmas lights competition that comes with a very impressive cash prize.

But when all the neighbour's head into a Christmas competition frenzy and strip the nearby shopping centres of all the good decorations, Chris feels his chances of winning the money slip away. While on the hunt for more decorations, Chris then stumbles upon a weird and wonderful Christmas store run by a charismatic woman called Pepper (played by a perfectly cast, Jillian Bell) who sells him a mountain of glorious (and slightly magical-looking) Christmas decorations.

What Chris doesn't realise is that, although he's now a shoo-in to win the Christmas lights competition, he didn't read the fine print of his purchases. Pepper, as it turns out, is actually a rogue elf with a slightly sinister agenda, bringing the 12 Days of Christmas to life and causing havoc for the whole town.

Chris then finds himself in a race against time to procure a series of magical Christmas objects in order to stop Pepper, save a group of strangers who had previously fallen for her scheme, and ensure his family still have a magical holiday.

In a storytelling twist, Candy Cane Lane, which was directed by Reginald Hudlin, was inspired by his own holiday experiences on the real Candy Cane Lane in El Segundo, California.

What makes Candy Cane Lane such a welcome addition to the slew of Christmas movies we turn to each December is the way it blends together a beautiful tale of family, resilience, and the true meaning of the holidays. While also including a series of magical plotlines and otherworldly elements, it will truly make you feel like you've stepped into a holiday fairy tale.

Candy Cane Lane is also a wildly compelling movie, because along with the feel-good Christmas elements wrapped around the plot, the storyline and the fate of these characters who you will grow to love make the stakes of this story feel extremely high.

After all, it is not every day you watch a movie that features a slightly diabolical elf using the power of Christmas to potentially take down a family and turn people who fall for her trickery into plastic dolls. All destined to live in a world that is perpetually caught in a Christmas loop.

As a viewer, you'll be on the edge of your seat wondering how Candy Cane Lane will end.

What also makes Candy Can Lane such an infinitely watchable new Christmas movie is the performances and chemistry of the key cast.

Eddie Murphy's signature on-screen charisma and comedic timing work perfectly alongside Tracee Ellis Ross's ability to bring nuance, charm, and laugh-out-loud moments to her character. After falling in love with the actress thanks to her long-running TV series Black-ish and for her scene-stealing roles in movies such as The High Note, there's a particular type of magic that happens on screen watching her play against Eddie Murphy.

The movie also boasts an impressive supporting cast of performers including Ken Marino (known for Party Down and Wet Hot American Summer), Robin Thede (known for A Black Lady Sketch Show), Chris Redd (known for Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping and Disjointed) and Nick Offerman (known for Parks and Recreation and The Last of Us) who perfectly bring this eclectic cast of Christmas characters to life on screen.

With a perfect balance of wit and warmth, fantasy and reality, Candy Cane Lane is one of those Christmas movies that adults and children alike can happily enjoy.

So if you're looking for a new feel-good movie to add to your Christmas traditions and holiday festivities, then Candy Cane Lane needs to be added to the top of your must-watch list.
