This coloured shower cap is confronting

We’re asking the big questions today at Mamamia. I’ve been waiting for the burqa thing to come up and this morning it did. On the campaign trail, Tony Abbott was asked about it and he replied:

“I don’t want to interfere with the operation of the legal system but I’ve said it before and I will say it again, I find the burqa a particularly confronting form of attire. I would very much wish that fewer Australians would choose it.”

Ugh. Come on. We don’t need a ‘debate’ about the burqua. What next? A citizens assembly to come to a consensus about whether it should be banned? We’re talking about the individual right of a few hundred people (at most) to wear a full face covering. It is not even in the top 100 issues that should be being debated in this election.

However. I was interested to see on Twitter that two of my favourite political journalists had a few things to say on the subject.

David Paris said: “I find budgie smugglers a “confronting form of attire” and wish “fewer” Australians would wear it”

Samantha Maiden said: “I am ‘confronted’ when people wear leggings as pants.”

Oh yes. Jeggings. Far more of a threat to our national security (and fashion sense) than the burqua. Amen to that.
