When it comes to skincare advice for over-40s, the internet can feel very exhausting. One minute, you're being told PDRN is revolutionary for mature skin. The next, someone is telling you it's overhyped.

So, what actually works and what doesn't?

Well, we went straight to our most trusted source, the You Beauty Facebook community, and asked them a much simpler question: What skincare habit actually made a noticeable difference to your skin after 40?

The responses came flooding in (thank you!), and interestingly, there was no single miracle product everyone agreed on. But there were a few clear patterns.

From retinoids and LED masks to skipping the morning cleanse and focusing on hydration, we've rounded up the skincare habits women over 40 say genuinely changed their skin.

And guess what? The consensus was that by sticking to these habits, their skin looks better now than it did a decade ago. How good?!

1. Committing to vitamin A (and sticking with it).

If there was one ingredient women felt strongest about, it was vitamin A.

Whether it was retinal, retinol or prescription vitamin A, many said this was the product that noticeably improved texture, tone and fine lines, as long as they stayed consistent with it.

One Youbie simply said, "Prescription vitamin A is the single best thing I have ever used and will continue to do so."

An anonymous member shared a similar experience, writing that "My skin is better now at 49 than it was when I was 40."

Someone else also noted that adding retinol to her routine has made a visible difference, alongside a collagen serum and regular LED mask use.

Products worth trying:

Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3, $99.

Go-To Much Brighter Skin Retinal, $59.

Prescription vitamin A through your GP or dermatologist

2. Focusing on hydration in lighter layers.

Another strong theme was hydration, with many women saying their skin responded better to layered hydration than thick, rich creams.

Several members specifically called out Aeon as a standout.

One member wrote, " Aeon, plus consistent LED and SPF."

Someone else said she'd recently started using Aeon Immorta as a night serum and added: "Oh my, it's incredible."

Another Youbie was equally enthusiastic, sharing that "With Aeon Liquid Magic, Immorta and prescription vitamin A… my skin is seriously like a baby's bum."

Products worth trying:

Aeon Liquid Magic, $90.

Aeon Immorta, $105.

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+, $20.76 (down from $25.95).

3. Doing less in the morning.

A surprisingly common answer had nothing to do with buying a new product.

One You Beauty podcast listener said one of the best changes she made was not using face wash in the morning, instead simply rinsing with water before doing the rest of her skincare routine.

Another agreed, adding that "supporting your barrier can also be affected by cleansing or over-cleansing."

For women with dry, sensitive or easily irritated skin, cutting back on cleansing seems to have made a noticeable difference.

Products worth trying (in the evening):

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, $11.89.

Ego QV Ceramides Cleanser, $11.99.

4. Swapping harsh scrubs for chemical exfoliants.

Chemical exfoliation came up repeatedly, particularly BHAs and gentle weekly acid treatments.

One particular Youbie said she swears by Paula's Choice BHA Liquid Exfoliant — a sentiment quickly backed up by the rest of the group.

Another member echoed this, calling it her 'only staple at the moment.'

Others mentioned weekly peels or glycolic treatments help improve skin texture and brightness without irritating the skin barrier.

Products worth trying:

Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, $54.

Dermalogica Rapid Reveal Peel, $125.

5. LED masks are more than just a hype.

LED masks have officially moved beyond trend status.

One follower said her skin improved after adding retinol, collagen serum, an LED mask and a weekly peel to her routine.

Someone else also named "vitamin A and LED mask" as the combination that's worked best for her.

Among the most-mentioned was the Omnilux LED mask, which popped up multiple times.

Worth trying:

Omnilux Contour Face, $605.

CurrentBody Skin LED Red Light Therapy Mask: Series 2, $679.99.

6. SPF remains the non-negotiable.

If there was one skincare step almost everyone agreed on, it was sunscreen.

One very smart Youbie summed it up simply: "Protection from the sun."

Another was equally firm, writing that "daily SPF is a non-negotiable."

For many women in the group, sunscreen wasn't just part of their routine — it was the routine.

7. Lifestyle habits matter.

Beyond products, a lot of women pointed out that skincare only goes so far.

One member of the group said the biggest difference for her came down to "SPF, hydration, good food habits and good sleep."

Someone else mentioned drinking plenty of water and not smoking alongside her skincare routine.

It's a useful reminder that while a serum can help, the basics still count.
