If you're a fan of Off Campus, you'll know that, for the past couple of weeks, the fandom has been ablaze with concern. 

What started as a bit of quiet photo archiving on Instagram has rapidly spiralled into full-blown internet detective work.

Truly, investigating the Belmont Cameli and Off Campus cast fallout rumours has been the internet's primary obsession this week, and honestly, I get it. 

I am just as deeply invested in the low-stakes drama surrounding this cast as anyone else. When fan accounts noticed Belmont deleting pictures of Ella from his feed and conspicuously skipping recent group outings with the rest of the crew, the collective gasp was audible online.

We love a pattern, we love a timeline and, above all, we love speculating about who is beefing with whom. It's all part of fandom life. 

But the escapades from the past few weeks has got me feeling quite bad for celebrities who land in these big ensemble casts. The moment a show gains traction, the actors are essentially stripped of any room to navigate their personal or professional relationships like normal human beings. 

Every photo, every like and every absence is instantly catalogued and analysed by thousands of people looking for a problem. 

Look, maybe Belmont just wanted to clean up the aesthetic on his grid and realised — far too late — that maybe that wasn't the best idea. Maybe he genuinely just didn't like the way he looked in them. Do I fully believe that? Doubtful, but I'm trying to give the man the benefit of the doubt here, okay? 

The reality is, we have no idea what's happening. 

Even if things were a little off between the cast at the moment, so what? Friendships go through weird, uncomfortable and shifting stages all the time. Sometimes people fight, sometimes they drift and sometimes two human beings simply realise they are literally just colleagues and nothing more. 

The media ecosystem surrounding popular shows creates an illusion that every cast is a tightly-knit chosen family, but the reality is that acting is a job. We've all had people we get along with during work hours and others we don't.

There's no feud, we're just professional colleagues.

Even in our personal lives, we've all felt the need to take a step back from a social circle without making a grand, dramatic announcement. The problem is, when everyday people do this, it's just a part of life. It's an experience we can all collectively understand. But when a famous actor does it, there must be a dramatic problem. 

Our modern expectation has become that if a group of people work together (and play characters who love each other), they must be inseparable off-screen forever. That is an absurd, completely unrealistic standard, even for the average person with a standard desk job. 

Enforced closeness during long shoot days doesn't guarantee lifelong bonds and forcing a performance of endless camaraderie off-camera sounds, well… exhausting.

If Belmont and Ella are having a spat, let them figure it out quietly. 

Maybe they're still besties. Maybe everything's fine. But even if they've just decided to keep things strictly professional moving forward, that's completely fair. 

Let these people navigate their messy, awkward or completely mundane social adjustments in peace.
